When it is time to save your marriage, your best friend isn't your 'best friend.' While she might help think and rethink a bit when you need some emotional guidance, her skill is limited, and she might look out for your side only. A marriage therapist is there to look out for you and your partner's relationship.
Couples therapists are licensed to guide troubled couples as they work through conflict in the relationship. The principles of couples counselling is designed to address issues within a relationship, and allow the partners to implement changes for themselves in order to work through these issues.
Of course, not all marriage therapists are on equal footing. When it's time to go to marriage counselling, it is important to select a therapist that fits what you need as a couple:
1. Availability: For busy couples, couples therapists who are available when they are come first on the list. This is understandable because you need to be 'present' during marriage counselling. Your mind should be in the process you are going through and not on the list of errands that you need to do.
2. Fee: Unfortunately, this should be a factor too. While saving your relationship shouldn't have a price tag, there is a budget to follow, especially if you are raising a family. Choose a marriage therapist who is willing to work with you within your available budget.
3. Values: The value set of couples therapists comes into play in the same way that you and your partner need to be compatible in your beliefs. Surely, a liberal couple cannot come into terms with a conservative therapist, and vice versa.
4. Religion: In couples counselling, the religious belief of the therapist may be a consideration if religion is an important part of the couples' lives. If the relationship is rooted strongly on each partner's spiritual belief system, a therapist who does not share the same belief system may not be able to fully comprehend the dynamics of the relationship. While ideally, this shouldn't be the case, some couples find it a crucial factor to consider.
5. Gender: Sometimes, when seeking marriage counselling, the gender of the therapist becomes a consideration. Again, ideally, it shouldn't be. A therapist should be able to address issues objectively, regardless of their gender. However, it can matter for some couples. The goal is to be at a certain comfort zone when going for couples counselling. The gender of the therapist plays a role here.
6. Reference: You can't always know who the best therapist for your needs is. Their fees don't always reflect their competence level. Sometimes, it's good to talk to friends, family and colleagues about this. Ask them if they know someone with whom you and your partner can work. Friends who've gone through therapy might have referrals. They can also share with you their experience with the therapist. If for the most part, these have been positive, then it's someone you should consider.
