Ceramic tile flooring may not be the most affordable, but they do look great and they can last for many years as well. Unlike carpet or wood, ceramic tiles are highly resistant to scratches and other kinds of surface damage, and they can also repel liquids and they do not stain easily; these qualities make them the perfect choice for humid rooms like your kitchen and bathroom. Since tiles are quite expensive , especially the larger ones, you need to make a couple of important considerations when buying and installing them in your home.
The Surface Must Be Perfectly Level
Installing ceramic tiles is actually quite simple; you just spread some cement on the surface, then place the tiles on top. But before you even start laying down the tiles, you must first make sure that the floor surface is perfectly level and does not have any bumps or dips on it. If you do not prepare the surface prior to installation of the tiles, you will find that some of the tiles are raised while some are recessed into the floor; needless to say, it will not look pretty. Carefully inspect the surface that you are planning on installing the tiles on, and apply plastic filler on the cracks and recessions and try to sand down the raised areas so that the surface is as smooth as possible.
Know Just How Many Tiles You Will Need
It is quite easy to estimate how many tiles you will need for an entire room, you just need to get the total floor area. To get a rough estimate, you just need to multiply the length by the width of the room; if there are some irregular areas like a fireplace jutting columns, you can just ignore them. You can now estimate just how many tiles you need by dividing the floor area by the area that a single tile can cover and then rounding the amount off to the nearest whole number; it is also wise to order maybe five or more extra pieces in case you break some during the installation process .
Laying Down the Tile Flooring
You should always start laying tiles from the middle of the room going outwards, never from the walls to the middle because you will always end up having to cut a couple of tiles so that they will fit properly; and it would look better if the cut tiles are along the walls rather than in the middle of the room. Before you actually cement the first piece onto the floor, you should try laying down a couple of them until they reach the wall, just so you can get a sense of how they will look like in the end.
In Closing...
Laying down tiles may seem like a simple task, but if you do not have any prior experience in dealing with cement and other kinds of masonry work, then it is recommended that you hire a professional contractor to do the work for you. As mentioned earlier, tile flooring is not cheap , and getting help from a professional will make sure that there is no wasted floor tiles.
