Hardwood flooring may look great but after a couple of years it will start to look its age. Some times these signs of age will add personality to the floor, but if the damaged areas are just unsightly, then you need to do something about it. No, you do not have to replace the damaged floorboards, that would cost too expensive. You may think that refinishing solid wood floors is something that is best left for professionals, then think again; it is actually pretty easy to restore your expensive wooden flooring, and it can be done in just a couple of hours.
Preparing the Surface
The first thing that you need to do when refinishing hardwood floors is to prepare the damaged surface. Look for dents, holes, and cracks in the wood and then sand them down a bit using slightly coarse-grit sandpaper. Create some filler material using wood glue and some sawdust until you get something that resembles wet sand, then apply the mixture into the indentations in the wood; it is alright if you have put a little too much as you will be sanding it down later anyway.
Sanding the Floor
Once the filler is completely dry, you can begin sanding down the entire floor until all of the old finish is completely take away. Seeing as it will take you forever if you try to sand your entire floor by hand, it is best that you rent a couple of sanding and buffing tools to help make the task a bit easier. You will need a drum or belt sander for most of the floorboards, and an edge sander so that you can get into the tight corners. Here's a helpful tip that you need to keep in mind while sanding hardwood floors; do not put too much pressure or you will do irreparable damage on your floor.
Re-applying the Finish and Buffing the Floor
After sanding the floor, thoroughly vacuum the floor, making sure that there is no more sawdust left on the surface; you can also use a damp microfiber mop if you like. Once the floor is clean, you can start applying the finish to the surface of the wood. The amount of finish you need will depend on the total area of your floor, but you need to make sure that you get enough finish for around three coats so that you can get a really deep shine. After your floors have thoroughly dried, use the electric buffer to polish the floor until it shines; it is recommended that you also use paste floor wax at this point so that your hardwood floor is not just shiny but also well protected.
In Closing...
As you can see, refinishing hardwood floors is really not that complicated. Even people who have no experience in doing things like this can actually do a good job; as long as they have the right set of tools and is willing to put some time and effort, then it is possible to restore the beauty of wooden floors so that they can look almost like new.
