All 3D glasses make use of stereoscopy. Stereoscopy, sometimes referred to as 3D imaging, is the technique used to produce or augment an illusion of depth. People need to take note that 3D technology as it is today does not exactly produce three dimensional images. Rather, 2D images are combined in order to give an illusion of depth.
There are basically two different forms of 3D technology today, active and passive. Each form of 3D technology works differently from the other. Both have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages that people need to be aware of before buying their own 3D system.
Shutter Systems Used in Active 3D
A variety of 3D glasses, a shutter system is a pair of glasses used in viewing 3D content on an active 3D system. Shutter systems are more complicated than their 3D passive equivalent. The name of this type of glasses is a comes from how the glasses operate.
The main difference between the passive and active glasses can be seen in how they function. An active pair of glasses allows its wearer to view stereoscopic 3D images by showing images intended for the left eye and blocking the right eye, and vice versa. This is done so quickly that it does not stop the brain from fusing the images perceived by the right and left eye.
Active 3D shutter systems are capable of blocking images because of the special lens that they use. Each of the lenses has a special layer of liquid crystal. Liquid crystal posseses a unique quality that makes it darker when an electric current is run through it.
The advantage of using active 3D shutter systems is that they are capable of virtually eliminating all 3D crosstalk. Active 3D shutter systems are also color neutral which allows the wearer to view the entire color spectrum.
The disadvantage of using active 3D shutter systems is that they are polarized and can darken the image. The problem can be offset by an LCD or LED display. The polarized glasses can sometimes increase contrast as a result of eliminating backlight bleeding.
Passive Systems Used in 3D
There are several different 3D glasses out there used in viewing 3D content. It is well beyond the scope of this article to discuss each and every single one. A few examples of passive 3D systems will be given to give an idea on what they are and how they operate.
The anaglyph 3D system is probably the pair of glasses that most people are familiar with. These glasses filter images through the use of lenses of chromatically different colors, usually red and cyan.
Basically, a polarized system displays stereoscopic images by projecting two images that are superimposed onto the same screen or through the use of polarized filters. Silver screens are used in order to preserve polarization. Using cheap glasses, viewers are able to see stereoscopic imagery. The filters only allows light to pass if it is similarly polarized thus each eye only sees one image each, which are then later on fused in the brain.
The main advantage of using passive systems is that they are cheap to produce. Passive systems aren't battery operated unlike active systems. However, passive systems can sometimes suffer from crosstalk. Finally, passive 3D glasses might not perform well outside typical viewing angles.
