With 3d films and even 3d TVs becoming more and more available and widespread, it's no surprise that a 3d camera would come not too long after.
Ever since 3d technology was developed, there has always been some form of a 3d camera. The first 3d cameras were just regular cameras, but they took two pictures that are slightly offset. And when viewed under a device that allowed you to view these two pictures at the same time, it created the 3d effect. Further advancements in 3d technology would use filters in the cameras itself to create much more realistic and immersive 3d effects.
Though, even with the advancements during this time, 3d filming and 3d cameras in general are expensive. Especially the production required to create the 3d images and distribute them to a wider audience.
The 3d cameras of today basically still do the same things as the 3d camera of old. Though instead of taking 2 offset pictures, some 3d cameras take a lot of pictures and combine the two best images available and create a 3d picture out of these two pictures. Some 3d cameras also have special displays that allow you to view the 3d image as soon as you take the picture. There are also 3d camcorders available in the market that are simply scaled down versions of the ones that are used to create the big budget 3d films.
Of course the 3d camera that you can get nowadays would also have functions similar to a regular camera, and a much more simplistic interface compared to those that film companies use. Of course the quality would not be as good as those high budget 3d cameras used in movies and professional 3d photography, but for the price and the technology available right now, the ones that are available to the public are still great.
Having a 3d camera is just one aspect of creating good 3d images or making a 3d film. You also have to take into consideration that some shots or angles are not too friendly when converted to 3d. Hence if you're making your own 3d film, you have to plan ahead and choose which shots to take. Good quality 3d editing software is also needed to create professional looking 3d output. Of course you need something to view the 3d images and videos, so a proper 3d television or a 3d display would be needed if you want to showcase your work. Though some higher end models of 3d cameras have special displays so you wouldn't have to bother with getting some 3d glasses or needing a 3d television in order for you to share your pictures.
All in all, 3d technology has been steadily developing ever since the days of stereoscopic images. A decade ago, only professional movie outfits even bothered with 3d images, but due to the accessibility and the advancements in technology, nowadays, anyone can get a 3d camera for a relatively affordable price, get some editing software, and share 3d images and films that anyone can appreciate. Well, provided they have the means of viewing the images and films.
