3d video games have always been one of those things that not only video game fans, but also the game developers themselves want to utilize and employ to the fullest. And with advanced 3d technology right here at our fingertips, 3d gaming is now a reality.
3d video games are a very recent development compared to 3d pictures and 3d films. The first few video games that used 3d technology used some form glasses or eyepieces to create the 3d experience. And most of these games were considered novelties, and not really up to par with the gameplay, story, and experience of the regular or non-3d games. One of these was a console called the Virtual Boy developed by Nintendo.
The Virtual Boy used a sort of visor that you looked through to show the 3d display and it used a controller to play the games. It failed to catch on not only because of the poor game quality, but also because the display itself caused headaches and it wasn't really the 3d experience that people wanted. Similar technologies would be developed after the Virtual Boy, but like their predecessor, none of these ever took off.
When high powered graphics cards were developed for gaming computers, the hardcore gamers with the most powerful computers caught on to the 3d gaming craze. Some developers were already making 3d capable games in order to utilize the powerful graphics cards that were being sold during this time. Though, it was still a small part of the gaming community that played games in 3d, and even then, it is very expensive since you had to have the top of the line computers to play the games perfectly in 3d.
3d gaming had its boom during the time when 3d technology became more accessible and cheaper to make. A good example is the 3d functionality on the PlayStation 3. With a 3d capable television, and the 3d glasses that come with the television, some games can be played in 3d. This provides a different experience to the player, since it's much more immersive and it shows something different and new compared to just playing a game in 2 dimensions.
The latest, and arguably the most popular in the line of 3d consoles is the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS uses Autostereoscopic 3d or Auto 3d. This means that the 3DS doesn't need any 3d glasses or other device in order to view the 3d graphics. You just need to place the 3DS a certain distance from you, and you would be able to see the 3d graphics perfectly. The 3DS sold 374,674 units during its release weekend and that the first day sales of the 3DS in the United States was the highest of any Nintendo handheld device in history. The 3DS has been a big leap in 3d gaming since it provided quality and popular games, and the option to play these games in 3d or in 2d.
Arguably, 3d gaming still has a long way to go. But looking at its currently short lifespan and the amount of development already made and the new technologies currently being developed, it's no question 3d video games are the wave of the future.
