3d glasses are a form of stereoscopy, or a way of creating the illusion of depth in a flat image. Before modern 3d technology, people used to look at 3d images with the aid of stereoscopes. Stereoscopes are similar to the glasses used in watching 3d, though instead of using polarized filters or colored filters to create the 3d effect, stereoscopes show a certain image to the left eye and a different image to the right eye that when seen together, creates the 3 dimensional effect.
A gadget similar to 3d glasses was developed in the 1940s, and it was called the View Master. View Masters looked similar to binoculars. And to use one, you put in sort of film disk in the film slot and looking through the eyepiece, you would see a 3 dimensional image. Most View Masters allowed you to view scenes from movies, and also places like the Grand Canyon. But the View Master only allowed for viewing still images and not moving pictures.
When 3d movies were first made, 3d glasses were used to simulate the 3d effect for the audience. And viewing 3d images or 3d movies without use of glasses or other similar tools would only show a blurred or out of color image that doesn't really show anything. And the basic premise of 3d technology would be to recreate the depth of perception in that what one eye sees is different from what the other eye sees, and when these are combined, it creates depth and along with that, 3 dimensions.
One type of 3d technology uses shutters and these are called 3d shutter systems. The 3d shutter system shows your left eye an image, and subsequently blocks what your right eye sees. It then shows your right eye an image and blocks what the left eye sees, basically using shutters to show each of your eyes a different image. It does this at a very high speed that that the human eye can't see the rapid blocking and showing of images thereby creating a seamless 3d image for the viewer.
Another type of 3d technology uses polarized filters in the lenses of the 3d glasses itself, these types of glasses use filters that filter out colors to show your left eye a different image from your right, thereby creating the 3d effect. This is most commonly used in 3d movies, and for some 3d attractions in some theme parks. Some 3d televisions also use this technology.
Other glasses use prism like films in their lenses to separate the colors of the image being seen, rendering the image in 3d. One of the most common glasses would be the red and blue glasses used in Anaglyph 3d. Anaglyph 3d images are the combination of two different images with different colors that are filtered so that one part of the image would be for the left, and another part for the right. And in doing so, it creates the 3d image. It is widely used in television to broadcast 3d shows without the need for a special 3d television and specialized 3d glasses since it just uses different colors to show the 3d effect. Though, compared to other forms of 3d, Anaglyph 3d has less quality.
