With the widespread popularity of 3d movies and the advancements being made in the field of 3d technology, and also with today's audience getting more and more into high tech forms of media and looking for "the next best thing", it's no wonder that 3d TV technology would be right around the corner.
One of the first ever examples of a 3d TV broadcast would be an episode of "The Real World" in which the audience were given 3d glasses so that they could watch the episode in 3d. A lot of different shows would be doing the same thing later on; though, these were simply 3d broadcasts and these broadcasts used standard televisions to create the 3d effect.
The first commercial 3d TV was released by Samsung in early 2010. Other manufacturers also followed suit and released their own 3d TVs with their corresponding 3d glasses. With the demand for 3d TVs getting higher and higher, manufacturers have developed and are still developing different technologies to not only cope with the demand for 3d TVs but also to get ahead the competition.
The most basic of these technologies would be Anaglyph 3D or put simply, wearing a pair of glasses with the red and blue lenses in order to view something in 3d. Anaglyph 3D is used to broadcast 3D to regular televisions provided the viewer has the red and blue 3d glasses.
Another form of 3d technology would be the Polarized 3d system, which is similar to Anaglyph 3d in that they both use glasses, but the Polarized 3d system uses polarized filters in their lenses to create the 3d effect. This technology is most commonly used in 3d movies.
There is also the Active Shutter 3d system wherein the glasses let you see the image for your left eye, whilst blocking the image for the right, then showing you the image for your right eye, while blocking the image for the left. This is done very rapidly so that what the viewer sees is the combination of both images, thereby showing the 3d effect.
Lastly, there are Autostereoscopic displays, or what is sometimes referred to as Auto 3d. Autostereoscopic displays or Auto 3d does not use glasses in order for a viewer to see the 3d effect. This type of 3d technology uses special lenses in the TV panel itself to recreate the 3d effect without having to wear 3d glasses. And even with all of these forms of displaying 3d available, manufacturers put out different forms of 3d TV or 3d formats year after year in order to develop a better experience for the viewer.
With all these technologies available for 3d TVs and with all the manufacturers continually researching and churning out bigger and better 3d televisions, one can say that in a few years time, 3d technology would be commonplace not only in movies, but also in TV broadcasts and most other forms of media. Who knows? One thing is for sure, the world has its eyes on how well 3d TV technology would do.
