Why go solar? There are a few very good reasons to go solar depending on your beliefs. Whatever your reasons though the answer to the question "why go solar?" delivers at least two really powerful benefits.
Let's assume that you are unhappy with your electricity bill, have noticed that it keeps going up by about 10% every year and are now asking yourself "why go solar?" as an alternative to the grid? Installing solar panels on your roof provides a way for you to generate your own electricity at the destination where it will be used and at a cost that will not be affected by the price of natural gas, coal, oil or any other of the fuels used to create electricity. We all know the price of fossil fuels is not about to go down anytime soon! What you pay per watt today will be what you will pay for electricity until the system has been paid for which is roughly 14 years at today's prices. After that you will not pay anything for the electricity generated. Consider the alternative for a moment. Electricity is going to go up 5-10% a year which means it will double every 7.5 years! If you install solar panels electricity will be free for the life of the solar panels after they are paid off. The life of the solar panels is more or less guaranteed by manufacturers to be at least 25 years at an effectiveness of at least 80% of the original power output. research though is showing that most panels last a lot longer at well above 80% output power if well maintained (cleaned). Good enough answer to "why go solar?" We're not finished with the good news just yet!
The most significant non cost benefit is that you will be playing a major part in helping to conserve our scarce resources and doing your part to help protect the environment. Power stations are amongst our biggest polluters contributing 38.4% of all CO2 emissions by pumping 1,800 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere a year. Power stations also use 49% of all the water consumed in the US every year making them a huge drain on the environment. What is even worse is that for every watt of electricity you receive at your home 3 had to be produced at the source because 2 of them get lost in the transmission of power across the wired network, called the grid, on their way to your home. Homes consume 32% of the electricity produced in the USA and therefore account for roughly 30% of all emissions from electricity generation.
Why go solar? From an environmental protection perspective, this is the main way that we, as a nation, will be able to drastically reduce our carbon emissions by up to 30%, move away from fossil fuels and cut water usage by up to 16%. These types of improvements are really significant and would probably take us a long way towards preventing global warming.
There is a third reason to go solar and it is a lot more subtle. If you go solar, you will probably become a lot more conscious of your own homes energy use and efficiency because when you install solar panels, you will start to think about what is consuming power and why. You will be getting more information about your power usage and you will probably have done quite some work to reduce your present consumption before installing the solar panels because it is a LOT cheaper to reduce waste than it is to generate the electricity to cover your present consumption requirements. There are a lot of fixes that don't necessarily cost you that much, but that will save you big in the long term. They start with simple things like your light bulbs and go all the way to sealing the envelop of your home properly to reduce unnecessarily cooling costs when you home is leaking all that cool air to the outside!
The fourth and final reason for installing solar panels is that there is anecdotal evidence that installing a solar system creates a real accelerating effect in your neighborhood. Installers say that once someone installs solar panels in a neighborhood, they see that there is a lot more interest from other members of the community in solar panels and that can help to fuel the acceleration of solar panel systems across the country, so your action today not only helps you, but ultimately also the rest of the community by showing them the way!
The average American's carbon footprint, the amount of carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere every year, is about 50,000 pounds or 6 times the world average. Why go solar? The most important reason would be because you would be able to make good progress on bringing down your carbon footprint by up to 12% or 6,000 pounds of CO2 per family member by adding solar power to your homes roof.
There was a great article in Clean Technica today called From Bush To Obama, US Army Goes Green, Then Greener about the US Army's initiatives to go solar and to a move to zero energy usage (from the grid) on their bases. That could be another reason you might want to install solar panels. It is food for thought indeed.
You don't care about your environmental impact? That puts you in a minority group of less than 20% of Americans now. If this is the case, then install solar panels because it is probably one of the smartest investments you can make in your home. By installing solar panels, you will probably increase the value of your home by about $14,000; stop your electricity bill from going up and over time get free electricity. If you don't want to pay for the cost of the solar panels now you can still stop your electricity going up as fast as it would with the grid by leasing solar panels. There are many companies offering lease deals on solar panels and if you choose to go this route, you are still going to help achieve all of the environmental benefits of solar panels still, even though you will not ultimately enjoy free electricity production. Leasing makes solar panels affordable for practically all home owners.
Don't ask why go solar, ask why not?
