Everyone experiences change, be it in their taste in clothes, food or people they hang out with. Change can have a positive and negative effect in people and this shall reflect in their place of work. Organizations must learn to accept and deal with change and make their people be aware of it to achieve a positive effect on the workplace. Many offices and businesses engage in team-building activities when they wish to achieve change in their people.
In team-building events, one fun game is called the Balloon Frenzy which involves participants and a facilitator. Teams of any size must be formed and every member of each team must have a balloon. The facilitator must have more balloons with him. The mechanics of the game is for every member to bounce his or her balloon while the facilitator little by little adds more balloons. The goal is to ensure the balloons do not stay on the floor. If six balloons fall to the floor, the game ends. The facilitator leads the members to a discussion on their feelings about the activity and how they should deal with such emotions. The facilitator processes the game and likens it to the time when change becomes overwhelming to the workers.
Another easy team-building activity is the Tea Break. The facilitator gives team players tea, coffee, food or any beverage to drink or eat indoors. He then leads them outdoors and inquires if their drink or food tastes the same when they were indoors. A discussion would then be started on why the taste is better inside or outside the conference hall. The objective is to impart that perception is involved in change. Members are encouraged to discuss their own perceptions for others to know their thoughts on change and how they approach it.
Laughter workshops should also be done by organizations so as to draw out laughter, enjoyment and camaraderie among the team players for them to face change in a positive way. One funny activity is the Photo Scavenger Hunt. The group is divided in sub-groups consisting of three to four members. The facilitator gives them a list of people, objects and places which they should look for and photograph. The facilitator must set a time limit thus the groups can go by foot or by car. When the time is up, the groups should show their pictures and should share the stories on how they captured them.
Another team building exercise is the Survival Scenario which teaches group members about their teammates and themselves and how to change for the betterment of the entire group. The participants should be divided in teams of six to twelve persons. All the groups will be informed that the plane they were in crashed in a deserted island. The members should each make a list that contains twelve of the vital things they must have to survive and then rank the items according to importance. The group should then share and compare each team player's list and then come up with one general list of the twelve most important items as a group.
These are the team-building activities organizations can engage in to bring about change.
