Have you considered rainwater harvesting for your home? For most home owners rainwater harvesting could provide sufficient water to meet most of your annual water needs. If you have a sprinkler system, roughly 58% of your water needs are for the yard, with another 20% for toilets and washing clothes, which do not need fresh clean drinking water, but rather grey or non potable water. At least 78-80% of your water needs could be taken care of from non potable or grey water – which we could derive on the property from rainwater harvesting.
The idea of rainwater harvesting is simple enough. Put a container at the end of your downspouts and you can harvest all the water that comes off your roof. However, in practice, it is not that simple as the present systems are not designed to do this task and effectively cope with all the variables yet, so a system has to be designed and built for your particular property. This is part of a much larger problem, which is that the home is one of the least well developed products manufactured today! Just compare your home with your mobile phone.
When considering a rainwater harvesting solution, there are three levels of solution to choose from. A simple system will harvest the water from the roof in above ground containers at the bottom of each downspout and allow the water to be distributed into your garden. This reduces the load on sewers by diverting the water and run off chemicals that your soil will naturally filter. It also helps to restore the water table in your neighborhood and takes care of some of the 58% of your yards water needs. Its easy to install such a rainwater capture system but because the containers are likely to be smaller in size, you probably won't capture all that much of the rainfall. However, it is a good way to get started. Once we step up from this basic system the variables and design criteria increase quite dramatically.
The design of your system will require four decisions:
1. Will you capture some or all of the available water?
2. Are you trying to meet the water needs of the yard only or do you want to use the water for toilets and washing clothes as well?
3. Above or below ground storage tanks? This one will get answered by your answer to the next question.
4. Do you want the water to be available for emergency (or full time) drinking water needs as well?
Coping with your yard water requirements is the least complex of the four options and can potentially get you close to a 60% saving. It is therefore also in most cases the most cost effective place to start. Visit our site to find out where you can get components for a rainwater harvesting system. Once you decide to use rainwater harvesting for inside use, it will require changes to the plumbing of your home will be required.
