If you are pondering the question "how to be green?" you have already become aware that perhaps the way that you are living is not quite as "good" as you thought it was a few years ago. It is not easy to answer the question of how to be green because while a lot of progress has been made to make the general population aware of our environmental risks, so far we have only traveled from a position of not really knowing that our modern way of living is a problem to a fairly clear understanding today that it is. We have not however made as much progress towards creating an alternative lifestyle that would answer the question of how to be green. In principle we now understand what it would mean, i.e. that we enhance the planets ability to support life whereas today the way we live is that we freely take from the earth and do not give back. We also know that our huge consumption of energy and its corresponding enormous CO2 output has to be reversed and brought back to zero or as close to as possible for the good of the planets ability to support life. This is not to say we should not use energy or enjoy the benefits of modern life. It means we need to find or use less wasteful means to achieve it.
If you live in America you have the most work to do and therefore the biggest opportunity to reduce your footprint. Every year the average American adds roughly 50,000 pounds or 25 tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. That is more than 5 times the world average. We've got a lot of work to do to become a leader in the green revolution America!
The best way to be green is to understand how your lifestyle is impacting the environment by measuring the negative effects your lifestyle has on the environment. step one is a commitment to a goal of having a zero or positive impression on the environment. Start by reducing what you can and offset the rest, at least while you are figuring out how to reduce the remainder of your carbon footprint down to zero and then into positive territory where the way that you are living is actually contributing to supporting life on earth instead of diminishing it.
Today it is already possible to become energy positive at home. With a combination of solar panels, wind generators and geothermal heating it is possible to turn your home into a mini power station where you are generating more electricity than you need pumping the rest back into the grid and thus by using the sun creating no harmful effects by your electricity generation. In case you were unaware, electricity generation from large power stations consumes 49% of all the fresh water use in the USA every year. It is incredibly costly in environmental terms. It is also possible to harvest the rainwater from your roof and process the waste water coming out of your home; producing cleaner water than is coming into your home and effectively enabling you to be disconnected from the water supply, thus saving all the negative effects from that public system. The same is true for sewage and your heating needs can be taken care of by geothermal heating, using the natural warmth of the earth's crust to heat your home instead of natural gas.
Solutions and the technology exist to replace all of our old bad polluters. Because business does not account for the environmental costs of those old systems, they are able to sell them very cheaply to the consumer, which makes it very difficult for the new clean energy solutions to compete against the old system and it's shareholders who are making huge profits at the expense of the environment. One of the only effective ways we have to fight this is to buy solar, wind and rainwater harvesting systems and essentially stop being their profit centers by withdrawing our dollars from their system. Every customer who does this is contributing to a reduction in CO2 and a huge reduction in the resources that will be needed to live as the renewables become the largest share of energy production 20 years from now.
We can answer the question of how to live green in the home as well as for transportation. Both would require some upfront investments from us as consumers , but food production is a different story. Unless you are prepared to grow your own food, that is one area that you would need to offset by buying carbon credits today.
Of that 50,000 pound CO2 footprint, about 34,000 pounds comes from indirect effects. For instance the commercial, industrial and transportation effects of the goods and services you purchase, which includes food.
The answer to how to be green is known today, it is just that few choose to live that way. We need smart thinking and innovation to make breakthroughs that would help make it feasible. There are so many actions we can do to reduce our footprints to at least 30,000 pounds in the USA. Unless of course you want to be one of the pioneers who want to reach zero pounds as we would! Then you run out of options before zero and need to innovate to get there still!
