With the rise of burglary cases in various counties, the sales of wireless burglar alarms have gone up.
While having a wireless burglar alarm can improve the security of your home significantly, there is more to home security than just installing wireless burglar alarms. In this light, homeowners are encouraged to perform an assessment of their homes to identify possible risks to life and property.
Here are a few tips and suggestions on how to further enhance home security:
For external doors, make sure that it is secured with a sturdy deadlock. Use a 5-lever mortice lock for wooden doors greater than 44 millimeters. Meanwhile, a 3-multi-point lock works best for PVC-u doors.
Check your door frames for any sign of weather damage or neglect. Burglars have the tendency to look for door frames which have weakened since it would be easier to break into. If the frame is in a bad condition, having a sturdy lock is pointless. In most cases you only need to reinforce your door frames. In situations that you need to replace the entire frame, make sure that the replacement frame conforms to government standards.
Back doors are usually less secure in most homes, which should not be the case. Make sure that the level of security applied on the back door is as robust as the ones used at the front door.
If you need to come out of the house - even for just a few minutes - make sure that door and windows are locked. Burglars are known to slip past open doors when the owner of the house least expects it.
For windows, make sure that the frames are still strong. Reinforcing materials are available just in case there would be signs of damage caused by weather, age, etc. For new windows, follow government-mandated standards.
For properties with communal entrances, make sure that measures are in place to prevent strangers from entering without permission. It is advisable to coordinate with neighbors with regards to securing entry through communal doors.
For outside areas, use lighting systems which can be turned on at night. Burglars would normally avoid lighted areas due to fear of being seen and apprehended. Motion detector-activated lights are also advisable since it would startle a burglar once triggered.
For yards and gardens, make sure that hiding areas such as shrubs and trees are trimmed to deny burglars a place to hide in. Also check for weak spots in the fences. Make sure that perimeter fences are high enough to discourage intruders from climbing over.
Leave garden tools and ladders inside a secure shed or garage. Garden tools lying around may be used by a burglar to pry open doors and windows. An unattended ladder can be used to gain access to the roof and upper floors.
For general areas, install wireless burglar alarms which can be easily hidden. Well-placed sensors systems can detect and startle burglars and make them run away in panic. The sound produced by the alarm can alert the owner and neighbors as well.
