One of the most common problems surrounding the use of wireless burglar alarms is that of a false alarm. According to the figures of a major metropolitan police force, 98 percent of the notifications they receive were caused by false alarms. This has been an ongoing issue for a lot of police departments since responding to triggered alarm systems - even false ones - do use up time and resources. As a result, some police departments have laid out some ground rules for homeowners: (1) homeowners will be issued a warning if the police receive a minimum of five false alarms in a month; and (2) if the issue persists after three months the police will cease to respond to the alarm.
Aside from gaining a bad rep with the police, frequent false alarms can affect relationships with neighbors who bear the burden of hearing the noise a false alarm would cause. For the homeowner who owns the defective alarm system, having to get up from bed and answering calls in the middle of the night would be a stressful activity when done often. As people get more used to false alarms, the more they tend to ignore it, similar to what happened to the boy who cried wolf in Aesop's fables.
One of the oldest tricks in a burglar's bag of tricks is to make people ignore false alarms. Burglars would intentionally trigger wireless burglar alarms and hides nearby as they wait for the owner to come out. Most of the time the homeowner would come out of the house, check the alarm, and assumes that it was just a false alarm. Not wanting to antagonize the police or the neighbors about the assumed false alarm, the homeowner does a major no-no: turning off the alarm system. This is the opening that the burglar has been waiting for.
False alarms of this nature are common in systems wherein the alarm can be triggered from the outside without causing any visible damage. In addition, some burglar alarm systems can be too sensitive, causing it to generate a lot of false alarms within a specific span of time. In the mid-1980s there was a case wherein a security company received more than 3000 alarms in a time when they only receive around 8 to 12 calls per day. The incoming notifications were too much that the computer in the police department handling the notification calls eventually broke down. The resulting investigation revealed the culprit: the strong winds generated by a hurricane that night triggered most of the false alarms.
False alarms can adversely affect a lot of people - from the police, the neighbors, and even the homeowner with the faulty system. It is therefore imperative that homeowners choose reliable wireless burglar alarms which are not prone to false alarms. There are a growing number of alarm manufacturers that are developing systems which actively monitors itself to prevent false alarms from occurring in the first place. However, a considerable number of false alarms are brought about by human error, usually caused by faulty installation and use of substandard sensors.
