Burglar alarms - the mere mention of the phrase somehow brings a sense of security in a world where people with criminal motives attack when and where you least expect them. People who venture into another person's property without authorization usually do it for different reasons, mostly of which are of a harmful nature. Some come to steal items of value, while some come to vandalize one's property, and worst, some come to do bodily harm. For whatever reason, it is imperative that any property owner take every necessary measure to safeguard not only their property but their persons as well. One simple yet effective means of securing property is by using wireless burglar alarms.
Throughout history, man has developed various means of detecting intruders who may have harmful intentions. Early man has utilized and trained animals such as dogs to guard their valuables and alert their masters if other persons have come near. During the Middle Ages, large bells or gongs were used to warn the people of various threats and emergencies such as fire, floods, or the occasional barbarian horde. To raise an alarm across long distances, horns, bonfires, and other methods that use sound and light to draw people's attention have been used. However, early methods of raising an alarm do have its limitations and drawbacks (e.g. dogs can be poisoned; enemy soldiers may disable the sentries in charge with the bells, etc).
As technology improved through the centuries, man was able to create more complex alarm systems which not only offer a significant degree of dependability but a more enhanced sense of security as well. The first electromechanical alarms used for doors and windows were basically magnetic switches connected to a battery and a bell. As a door or window is opened, the circuit is closed and sets off the alarm. From this basic concept a lot of improvements on alarm design were introduced.
At the turn of the 20th century burglar alarms were connected to the police and fire departments through phone lines. This has dramatically improved response times and has helped deter many crimes from being committed in the first place (criminals now know that once an alarm is tripped, law enforcement will arrive within minutes). In the decades that followed, innovations such as the ultrasonic, photoelectric, and infrared motion sensors, as well as delay mechanisms and remote controls, have greatly enhanced the effectiveness of burglar alarm systems.
With the advent of computers and the Internet, burglar alarm systems have benefited from these technological marvels. Innovative features such as programmable alarms systems and wireless burglar alarms have paved the way for widespread automation and convenience. Programmable alarms allow the user to set specific actions which the system will perform at various times of the day. On the other hand, wireless burglar alarms enable the user to seamlessly integrate the alarm with various security features such as heat and smoke detectors, flooding detectors, as well as gas leak detectors. Truly, today's burglar alarms have come a long way and is continuously evolving for a more safe and secure society.
