Are Today's Normal Goal Setting Activities Actually Working?
Today everybody is looking for the means to find the most abstract objective ever designed: happiness.
Everybody desires it, but when you ask somebody point blank what happiness is to them, they stop in their tracks, as if to say "Wow, I never truly considered that before ..." Normally people simply want to be "not sad" or "not in this crappy job any longer" but right here is the something that you need to understand about what happiness is, and why the typical accepted goal setting activities we attempt to utilize every day aren't working:
The reverse of happiness is not unhappiness, it is boredom.
In the book "The 4 Hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferriss, he says that excitement is the more functional synonym for happiness, and it is precisely what you should chase. It is the cure-all. Do not ask "What do I want" or "What are my objectives," but "What would thrill me?"
Saving Cash Alone is Not Enough as Far as Goal Setting Activities Are Concerned
Many people specify "I want $ X" but forget to specify "I want to do X activities" If you do not define the alternate activities, the "$ X" figure will keep expanding for life to stay clear of the uncertainty of this void.
Real quick, consider, or take a look at, people who are on the exact same path as you, but 15-20 years further down the road. This is your future if you stay on this road. Is this the path you truly want to go? Is that end result what you really want, or does the thought of being that guy or girl scare the hell out of you?
The worst that might occur is not crashing and burning, it's accepting terminal boredom as a satisfactory status quo. Remember, boredom is the enemy, not some abstract "failure."
Then Timothy Ferriss goes into a goal setting activities procedure known as Dreamlining. It's like normal goal setting activities, but with really fundamental differences:
Objectives shift from ambiguous wants to specified actions.
Goals have to be unlikely to be efficient.
It concentrates on activities that will fill the void produced when work is gotten rid of. Living like a millionaire needs DOING interesting things and not just HAVING enviable things.
With that being stated, here are the Dreamlining questions and steps that he asks in the book:
1. What would certainly you do if there were no way you could fail? If you were 10 times smarter than anyone else in the world?
Produce 2 timelines, 6 months and 12 months. In each list up to five things you dream of having, being, and doing, in that order. If you have a hard time identifying what you want then think about what you absolutely don't want, what you are afraid most, and write its polar reverse. Don't worry about how they will be achieved. For now just write them down, and do it without guilt.

2. Drawing a blank?
If you're stuck on what to put down look at these questions:

Don't hurry on this. Really take a couple of minutes to think about these and write them down. if after that you're still stuck fill in the five "doing" spots with these:

3. What does "being" entail doing?
Switch each "being" into a "doing" to make it something you can act upon. You want to be ... what, so you can DO ... what? Do you want to BE a wonderful cook so you can DO the act of making Christmas dinner without help, for instance?
4. What are the four dreams that would change it all?
Making use of the 6 month timeline, highlight the four most interesting and/or the most crucial dreams from all columns. Repeat the procedure with the 12 month timeline of you want. Advised, of course.

The fact is that there are a lot of things that can happen in that 5 year, 10 year, or even 1 year that can trigger us to noticeably shift course.
This is why the timelines right here are generally set for 6 months and 12 months respectively. Too much far-out preparation primarily becomes an excuse for inaction. What this exercise is for is not to outline every step from here to there, but to define the desired end outcome, the needed vehicle to get us there, and to develop momentum with these vital initial steps.
Let's focus here on these very first vital steps. Specify 3 actions for each dream that will get you closer to its actualization in the meantime, tomorrow (finish before 11AM) and the day after (again, before 11AM.)
Once you have the three steps for each of those four goals, complete the three actions in the "now" column. Each one should be simple sufficient to do in 5 minutes or less. If not, then bring it down a notch or two.
Commit your action appropriately if it includes other people. If you're doing this in the middle of the night and you need to call somebody who you know isn't really awake, do something else now and call first thing in the early morning.
If the next action is research, see if you can first get in contact with somebody who knows the answer instead of spending too much of your time in books or online.
Bear in mind, tomorrow becomes never. No matter how little the task, take the initial step NOW!

The reason I wished to share this is because it actually contacted me as someone who was originally headed down the path of large overwork with nothing but a destroyed body from working as a full-time massage therapist, and a more damaged will to live.
Life is not meant to be lived tomorrow, or 5, 10, or 40 years from now when we forget ways to live our lives with a smile. It's meant to be lived right fucking NOW!
So do yourselves a favor and complete these goal setting activities. Seriously, this is something that you can not afford to put off.
