They say that the automobile is an extension of its owner's personality. Sometimes, their preferences when it comes to cars say a lot on what they value regarding their vehicles. It is because of these preferences that car customization arose. Some like their cars to be fast. Others want them to be comfortable. And others still want it to be flashy. That said, a lot of customization techniques has been developed over the decades. And yet, one of the most practiced of them all is lowering the suspension. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using such a technique and how can you do it safely?
First, we'll talk about the advantages of having a lowered car. The most obvious advantage is much cooler style. Everybody seems to like lowriders as a lowered stance often brings out the best from a specific car's contours and lines. But there are very tangible advantages of having a lowered stance, with the most notable being a much improved handling. This can be explained in different levels. One, it reduces a car's center of gravity, allowing it to move along corners at a much quicker pace. Also, a lowered car also means tighter springs, which means reduced body roll and improved cornering abilities. As long as the chassis geometry is respected, handling is expected to be improved, not hurt, by a lowered setup.
But there are some disadvantages associated with lowering a car. For one, when ride height is reduced, ground clearance is also compromised. Because of the reduced ground clearance, the chances that the body would scrape into the ground, especially when traveling on speed humps or elevated pavements. That's mainly the reason why air suspensions and hydraulics (more on them later) were developed. Another disadvantage of such a setup is it can be potentially damaging (and even dangerous) when done the wrong way. Stories of compromised handling and even collapsed suspensions are rife. Those could have been prevented if the car is lowered the right way.
How can you lower your car the right way? Actually, the answer to that question may vary depending on what car model you have. Each car has a different suspension setup, so one set of settings won't necessarily work with all or even most cars. One of the safest bets for reducing the ride height of your car is to purchase a lowering kit compatible with the year and model of your car. Consisting of modified springs, dampers, and coilovers, it's a safe way to reduce the ride height of your vehicle without compromising the car's handling, comfort, or safety. Another way is to install adjustable kits such as air suspensions and hydraulics. These systems, with the flick of a switch, can raise or lower the car's height when necessary.
Reducing the height of your suspension can create a ton of difference when done properly. Regardless if you are trying to create a lowrider or a tuner, you can increase your vehicle's style and substance if you apply proper techniques to get that lowered look.
