The term 3D TV is used to describe technology that allows individuals to watch movies, programs and other video content, in 3D format on their television screens. The content has an illusion of depth to it as opposed to the normal 2D content which is limited to a display of height and depth only.
Basically a 3D TV functions in the same way as a 3D theatre and allows you the same effect from your screen. It works by displaying two different images on the screen simultaneously targeting the viewers left eye and right eye. These two images appear as one to the viewer but in reality they are two separate ones and the 3D technology is responsible for this effect. The viewer is expected to wear 3D glasses when viewing this content in order to receive the content as 3D otherwise it will only be visible in 2D format.
The system responsible for this phenomenon is a technology known as stereopsis. It's based on the scientifically proven fact that the adult human eye lies 2.5 inches apart and so it views objects from two different angles which when combined in our minds create an illusion of depth. The two images on the 3D monitors work in the same way and the 3D glasses are the ones that gel the two images together to create the depth effect just like in our brains.
In the past the 3D glasses were tinted in different colors and when used to view the 3D content resulted in discolored displays which were at low resolutions. Now we have new and improved 3D technology for the TV, that displays in full color and affords us high resolution in areas such as Blue-ray 3D as well as in broadcast 3D which is a process used by DirecTV.
Many people have had the benefit of experiencing IMAX 3D in movie theatres. Well the only difference between that experience and the kind of effect you get from 3D TV in your home is the size of the screen you are viewing the content from and the distance from which you are accessing it.
The view we get from our home 3DTV is smaller so the effect is much less immersive. Some viewers tend to sit closer to their 3D TV screens so as to increase that immersive effect but this is not recommended as it can result in eye fatigue and headaches as well as nausea in severe cases. Viewers are advised to sit at a distance of 3 times the screen height from their 3D TV for safety reasons.
