The Laboratory of Your Mind

We each have a mind. This is true, even if it seems contrary of some of the people in our lives. Our minds are capable of incredible things. You can formulate a goal and go after it. You can think up new music. You can create art. You can read and learn. You can write articles and books and essays. Or you can use your mind as a second rate movie house and just replay old movies. You can replay dramas that never happened. You can replay old music. You can muse over old conversations and never take the time to entertain an original thought. As you can see, your mind can be used in ways that serve you, or in ways that don't.

Your mind is the laboratory of your life. You can work on yourself to your heart's content, test out theories, and if they don't pass muster, dismiss them and find new theories to test. You are your own experiment. Each experiment either contributes to or degrades the quality of the whole.

The thoughts you ponder are the substances in the test tubes. You can have pleasant and calm waters steaming like afternoon tea. You can have extreme, but exciting and helpful mixtures bubbling away, or you can have caustic and destructive ones that overflow and damage their surroundings. Whatever you are testing, whatever you are pondering, will show up in the experiences of your life.

The Test Tubes in your Laboratory

What if you seem to always be entertaining negative things and volatile substances are percolating away in your laboratory? Get ahold of the negative thoughts and take a hard look at them. Some people have negative relatives or just negative experiences of their relatives and so they are focused on the bad associated with those relationships, which admittedly can be very close at hand. Look at that thought process and realize that while you may be disappointed with this person or his or her choices, you can't live this person's life. I've had to face this lesson over and over, most recently with one of my sisters, and I finally had to realize that I had to let go of any desire to make her life anything other than the life she was willing to live. I had to let go.

The people in our lives are important to us, of course they are, but the people in your life cannot have center stage in your laboratory. Why? Your mind is the laboratory of your life, not theirs. Their minds are the laboratories of their lives. You may want good things for them, but you can't live their lives for them. You can't make their decisions for them either, unless you have power of attorney. The people in your life must remain outside of your central mental focus. You can help them, but you can't live for them. If your life is not the center of your focus, you will go nowhere. You can do nothing. You will remain where you are at best, and at worst you will stagnate into nothingness.

Realize that as Abraham Maslow asserted, you are the scientist of your life. Begin today to shift your focus from negative to positive. Your mind is your laboratory.
