Among the many things budding psychologists wanted to be while getting older was a therapist, a formally trained listener-slash-problem-solver-slash-advisor. Some people were quite curious about other people, how they ticked, and what went on in their minds. And over time they realized that this interest in others was partly a manifestation of their keen interest in developing my psyche and getting to know themselves better, "introspecting" for short. For a short while they actually considered becoming one of the marriage therapists; they figured, "I guess helping two people at a time is better than helping just one person at a time..." While considering this career path, it was not uncommon for them to approach other, more experienced psychologists or therapists in order to gain more light on the subject.
Sometimes the difficulties in a relationship become so stressful and troublesome that professional help is required to solve them-this is where marriage therapists come in. As the name suggests, these professionals are people who have received formal training on how to resolve marital conflict and problems. At first it was believed that this job was quite similar to other therapist professions, but while discussing the work with an actual marriage counselor, it gradually became clear that the job was tougher than it looked.
One of the main differences in being a marriage therapist is that the therapist will be dealing with two, instead of one, person at a time during the counseling periods. In terms of being a researcher, it's usually easier to conduct interviews instead of focus-group discussions. Aside from being a listener and conversation partner, the therapist must also serve as a mediator between the two other individuals in the room. Acting as a mediator can be a real challenge, especially because it is not uncommon for clients to start fighting during a therapy session. Apparently the peaceful, understanding, soft-spoken therapist simply won't do in couples's therapy. One must be able to listen and confront at the same time, and more importantly, the therapist must mediate in such a way that the two parties can nonetheless understand each other fully.
For this simple reason the path of marriage counselling is still less common that other therapist professions (e.g. child psychologist, psychiatrist). Over time one may learn that if one is a shyer and reserved psychologist, he or she may not be as capable of performing counselling therapy work. In the end, it is best to stick to less confrontational ways of learning and helping other people.
Belittling the role of marriage therapists is not the goal of this article, instead it is just hoped that emphasizing some of the necessary personality traits that the job demands will give others a clearer picture of the profession they may wish to choose. Furthermore, as an inexperienced therapist, one may also explore different types of therapist jobs through internships before finally choosing a focused practice in mind. In the end one must discern which type of counselling work is best for him, based on his natural abilities and inclinations in the realm of psychology.
