Undergoing therapy comes with a lot of stigma. It's easy to see one who undergoes counselling as one who is not "normal". Nevertheless, it has become an accepted fact that some people cannot deal with their problems alone, and thus require the help of licensed therapists. Over the past decades, there has been an increase in focus on the individual rather than the community. People have begun placing more emphasis on the achievement of ambitions and self-actualization. And perhaps because of this heightened focus on individuality, less patience has been given to things like commitment to another, and thus the rates of divorce have increased over the years. In this new age of modernity and individualism, there grows an increased demand for couples counselling.
Of course, if individual therapy has its stigma, couples counselling inevitably has its stigma as well. Alongside this, such counselling also requires a lot of time and money for it to be effective. Nonetheless, it has indeed proven to be effective, and its demand has steadily risen over the past few decades.
One of the cool things about couples counselling is that instead of simply arguing one-on-one, there is a therapist who serves as a mediator between the opposing parties. This mediator provides a very important outside perspective on a couple's distressful situation, and he or she can help shed light on which areas of the relationship need improvement. Another important role the therapist can provide is that of a third listener, that is, one who can listen to the arguments from an objective standpoint instead of an angry, impassioned one. Couples counsellors help their clients gain a deeper understanding of their ambitions, their dreams, their inconsiderate habits, their thoughtful behaviors, and basically everything about the relationship that the couples may have never realized before. They also help the clients create new ways of solving problems and moving on from old wounds. And, perhaps most importantly, couples counselling allows the couples to understand each other and their own selves more deeply.
There is no reason to be afraid of couples counselling; if anything, one might only be afraid of the stigma attached to it. There is nothing wrong with going to therapy if it would save an important relationship; in fact, it is actually a sign of dedication and courage. A couples counsellor is always supportive, and never harsh. The only downsides to attending therapy are the time, money, and effort it requires, but indeed these things are likely to become a good investment instead of a waste. It is also important to note that this counselling often works even if only one of the two parties is interested in attending.
More marriages can be saved if more people were willing to attend couples counselling. It is disheartening to imagine the number of potentially long-lasting relationships that have gone down the drain simply because not enough dedication was exerted, and the easy way out was chosen instead. Today there are many websites that contain relevant details concerning couples therapists. Through these websites, interested parties can easily contact therapists and begin their counselling, and subsequently, the reparation of their relationships.
