"I am, therefore I exist," is a phrase affirming one's existence as a living being. It may be a simple phrase, but it says much about the person saying it. It indicates a confidence in a uniquely expressive way.
But why do people need affirmation? Why do beings need to be affirmed? Is existence relative to one's affirmation? One need only look at his or her own progress in life to see confirmation of this truth. A person is either built up by his or her affirmations or broken by his or her negations.
Affirmations affirm your desires
Affirmation is a very powerful technique to empower one's subconscious. Once the subconscious is disciplined to believe one's affirmation, the latter is converted into a positive action for the conscious mind. Through affirmation, beings are empowered to do, to work, and to strive to do, be and have better circumstances, and even better lives. Affirmation allows people to believe in themselves and to put their thoughts into action.
Affirmation is a combination of verbal and visual techniques of a preferred state of mind of a person. Strong affirmations can be very powerful, and can be used by almost anyone to achieve his goals and fulfill his desires. However, the power of an affirmation depends on how strong or weak an affirmation is.
Affirmation is merely an assertion made by a person about something or about a state of being. The affirmation affirms a preferred state of being. People can affirm those conditions and things that they choose to attain, like "I now have a good life." Being healthy in mind, body, and spirit can also be made possible through affirmation.
Affirmations are best when strong
A strong affirmation should be stated in the present tense to be more effective. An affirmation of "I am now a happy being" is more effective than an affirmation saying, "I am going to become a happy being." The latter emphasizes happiness occurring at a later date, effectively delaying your happiness indefinitely. That's definitely not good. Affirmation should also always be in positive terms because it is supposed to work for you and not against you. The negative use of an affirmation might be, "I am not sad." When saying, "I am not sad," one must focus on being sad in order to then focus on the opposite. Be particularly aware of this sort of negative statement, which forces you to focus on the negative condition without any emphasis on its opposite. It's far better to focus on the positive from the beginning. Instead, make a strong and positive affirmation by saying, "I am happy."
I have found a particularly effective method of affirmation that I use regularly. It comes from Dr. Marta Hiatt, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and was published in her book Mind Magic. In her book, Dr. Hiatt suggests a triplicate affirmation. Much like putting yourself in your visualization, Dr. Hiatt's affirmation is formatted to incorporate your name into your affirmation, thereby creating an even stronger affirmation than simply an affirmation based on the ubiquitous "I." The triple format comes from her method of using three different points of view for each affirmation. So for instance if my affirmation is "I am living in my dream home," I would format my affirmation in the following manner:
I, Ignacio Ceja, am living in my dream home.
You, Ignacio Ceja, are living in your dream home.
He, Ignacio Ceja, is living in his dream home.
According to Dr. Hiatt, using your affirmation in this manner makes your subconscious believe that other people also believe in your right to have your desired end (104). Having used this format for years, I can tell you from personal experience that it has worked for me.
Affirmations are best when precise
An affirmation should be made up of simple but concise words, and it should be relatively short to be more effective. A very long affirmation can work the other way around, instead of creating a positive mindset for a person. Without proper care, a long affirmation may include the conditions that you don't want in your focus. A short affirmation can be easily spoken and repeated. It can serve as a mantra that can be repeated over and over again.
To be effective, an affirmation must be repeated. Repetition works and influences the subconscious, which in turn motivates the person into acting out his affirmation. A person who creates the affirmation should be deeply involved with the words he will be using, so he will be able to actualize his affirmation. Writing words that one believes in can be very powerful, and this can be put to good use when creating an affirmation. Bear in mind though that repetition is not supposed to feel like a job. Like visualization, affirmation is best used once or twice a day, and only employed more often if negative circumstances might cause you to focus on the conditions you are trying to change.
However, creating an affirmation alone and repeating them a million times would not make the affirmation a state of mind. The important thing is to live one's affirmation and to be open-minded enough to do the things that would help the affirmation become a reality. Feeling the affirmation and applying it in one's life will help in making the affirmation a reality. Everything in this life requires doing, but do understand that as your subconscious takes hold of your affirmation, the doing will become much easier.
While affirmation is generally used to make an individual better, it can also be used to boost or confirm another person's value. By affirming another person's existence, you are helping him improve his self-worth. Affirmation is a very simple thing that can make a very big difference in a person's life. It can be a great motivator and can make things happen.
Would you like to use affirmation but aren't sure where to start? While you figure out what you want out of life, I suggest starting with the primo affirmation of the eminent French psychologist Émile Coué, "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better."
Pair affirmation with visualization and affirm your life.
