I have used plenty of external disk drives over time: a few of them really good, some extremely bad. And that's regardless of the more well-known brand names such as Western Digital. The sober reality is that there is no absolutely guarantee that simply because you've bought a hard drive from such a reputable company it will be faultless.
So rather than venture along the usual Western Digital road I made a decision to opt for something a little original. To be completely honest I didn't even realize Samsung produced disk drives. I recognize that they're one of the leading electronics companies in the world: so much so that I recently bought one of their Smart HDTVs, and have been really satisfied with the results so far. And because I likewise own a Samsung smartphone - again with similar satisfying results - I made a decision to take a chance with this specific portable hard drive.
It was despatched in very good time (inside 2 working days, despite the fact that I selected a regular delivery). The only one point I would point out about the delivery would be the packing from supplier. Given the delicate nature of hard drives I would have thought something more sturdy than a flimsy jiffy bag would have been used; or at the very least a red stamp on it saying "FRAGILE". Fortunately the drive didn't appear to be damaged either internally or externally, but perhaps I was just lucky.
The installation is quite straightforward: a reasonably short (around 25-30 cms) USB2.0 cable plugs into the rear of the drive and into your laptop/pc. The drivers will probably be automatically located, and inside of about a minute the PC detected the drive and gave it a drive letter.
It is true to say you do not have the complete 1Tb of disk volume. This has always been the case with drive storage, and not just with external drives: PCs & laptops throughout the last 20 years or so have declared "rounded" storage capacity that doesn't quite mirror reality. One more good feature about this disk drive is that it was delivered preformatted in NTFS instead of FAT-32 as on older models. This is important, particularly while backing up bigger files that go over the FAT-32 limit of about 4Gb.
To be completely honest, I haven't really bothered with the additional application that comes with the drive: it revolves around drive management and auto-backups. But in all honesty these features actually exist with Windows 7 and because of this I didn't bother installing this and merely amended my W7 backup procedure to involve this drive.
Being portable it doesn't need its own power source, and that is a considerable benefit not least because it means one less cable to worry about. And once I did start copying documents over I was amazed at how incredibly quiet the drive was. Is also remarkably lightweight for a TB drive and really sleek too. In fact if it wasn't for the little blue power light you would never guess it was actually doing anything! And because its USB2.0 file transfers are very quick, which is crucial when copying large VOB files.
My reason for getting this external drive was to hook it up to my brand-new Smart TV and then watch all my comedies, documentaries & films from my 120 DVD library under one "roof", so to speak. I continue to copy my comedy DVDs - 30 so far. And even though I am doing a straight copy instead of converting into a different video file format (avi for instance), I have only used roughly 120Gb from those 30 DVDs. I still have around 700Gb to play with. And on reflection I will almost certainly buy another one of these drives and copy my films to it rather than having all my eggs in one basket, which always raises the possibility of losing everything should the drive fail.
In summary: I've had this drive for about a week, and love it! It's sleek, light, easy to use, fast, capacious and fits in well with my matt black TV & Blu-ray sound system (the drive comes in different colors, however I opted for black so that it wouldn't attract attention excessively).
Like I said at the outset of my review: there is no guarantee a drive will run perfectly, whatever the brand name. I have bought a 2nd Samsung 1Tb drive, and there's always the potential I will have complications with it; just as I did with Western Digital drives and others during the past 20 years. A good reputation is important naturally, however in the real world problems still happen. So don't be put off taking a chance with this Samsung drive. I think its great.
