Author Name: Chris Bradley
The Apostle Paul is one of the most well known leaders of the early Christian church. In his letter to the Galatians, he touches upon one of the most basic teachings. He states as follows: "The entire law is summed up in a single command. 'Love your neighbour as yourself'." (Galatians 5:14, NIV) He then encourages people to live according to the Holy Spirit and to turn away from sin. He then goes on to mention what is now known as the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are 9 attributes that a person who lives by the Spirit will possess. They can be found in Galatians 5:22-23 which states: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." This stems from the various verses in the Bible to which men are likened to trees and that people who follow the commandments of God would bear the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. This article aims to touch up on each one by one.
Love
This connotes encompassing, everlasting, unconditional love. The kind of love that is frequently discussed in the Bible. More than that, it was exemplified through the life of Jesus Christ who expressed love at its fullest by sacrificing himself on the cross to save us from sin.
Joy
Everyone aspires to live a happy, joyful life. It is apparent that this cannot be attained through material wealth alone. It requires a relationship with God for in him alone can we find true joy.
Peace
Peace connotes a certain sense of quietness and satisfaction, something that does not want for anything. Someone who lives in the Holy Spirit would therefore find peace because he/she sources his/her strength from God. A person who trusts God will be at peace because they know that he will always have their best interests at heart.
Patience
Trusting God would also mean that they know he will give everything we need in his own time, helping us to grow and build character. Someone who exemplifies patience would also allow other people to grow by not pre-empting them or discouraging them with their rash actions.
Kindness
Kindness seems like a generic trait but it is also a valued one. It pertains of our treatment of other people and how we react to certain situations. When faced with a beggar, do we extend our help? When a person commits a mistake to our detriment, do we get angry at them? All these are questions that, if met with kindness, can both shape ourselves and the people we interact with.
Goodness
This manifests in a person when he keeps a close relationship with God since the ultimate test of goodness is God himself. Though we can never be his equal, we should aspire to truly be like him.
Faithfulness
This does not pertain only to our religion but also our faithfulness to other people, especially our spouse. God puts great importance to covenants such as marriage and though there will always be temptation surrounding us, we would never be swayed because we have faith.
Gentleness
To speak to person with kindness and tenderness is epitomized by Christ who let even lepers touch him and prostitutes to wash his feet. This, in turn, led them to salvation.
Self-Control
There are many earthly things that deter us from achieving eternal life. But if we focus on our goal and keep in our love for the Lord then we would be able to exercise self-control.
