As years progressed, sashes became characteristic pieces of clothing present in the officers of the armies of France, US, Great Britain, India and Pakistan.

The prominence of sashes led to its more frequent use as a way to honor prominent people. The actual date and place wherein the first use of pageant sashes has not been recorded, but it is stated to have originated as a trial piece that an event organizer used as an aid in highlighting a person's victory. Because the sash made the audience acknowledge the winner more clearly, the hosts considered the program a successful one. Since then, several competitions have started imitating the practice. Presently, this particular type of sash is continually used in beauty contests to award the triumphant participants of the program.
