Can ADHD diet programs make postitive improvements in ADHD kids? A recent review of the literature says "yes" or "maybe."
Together with pediatric and adolescent psychiatrists, a research team from the University of Copenhagen have actually just completed an extensive report which examines many of the researches which have been done up until now on the role of diet for kids and young people with ADHD. The report shows that there are possible benefits in altering the diets of kids with ADHD, however that vital knowledge in the area is still being without.
The comprehensive report covers the clinical literature on the significance of diet for children with ADHD.
Professor Kim Fleischer worries that greater number of analysis is required: "Several of the studies show, for example, that fatty acids from fatty fish moderate the symptoms. Other studies detect no effect. Elimination diets are also promising. These look at whether there is anything in the diet which the children cannot consume without adverse side effects. However, we still lack knowledge about which children with ADHD benefit from dietary changes, how positive the effect is in the long term and what the changes mean for children's health."
The report shows that not all ADHD children benefit from modifications to their diet, and that there are still lots of unknown factors. Larger studies are still required and are recommended by the analysis team. The experts hope that, by acquiring greater number of understanding on the topic, it is feasible to decrease the use of medication and as an alternative establish special dietary assistance for kids with ADHD.
The ADHD Information Library at http://newideas.net has explored the effectiveness of ADHD diet programs for years, and believes that 20% to 25% of those who will use an eating program for ADHD will benefit. It is certainly worth looking into.
