Many individuals ask me about DSLR's and want to know what the best camera really is since they want to take great pictures.
My answer is that there are a great many options for you, but it is dependent on your budget.
Then I reiterate what I always say: "The camera will not create great pictures, you will.
A shot worth keeping is one based on the composition and the eye of the photographer. Don't assume that a first-rate camera means a top of the line photographer!
The Digital SLR photography tips below can really help to improve the quality of your photography.
This article focuses on tips to help you really improve your shots. I encourage you to use the suggestions below and get out there. Practice. Practice, Practice.
Use your flash outside
While it is true that natural lighting is best, there are times when a flash might be very helpful. Flashes on DSLR's can only bounce light up to 10 feet. So if you are in an auditorium and way back from the stage, your flash will have little to do with lighting the object of the shot. (It may, however, light the heads in front of you.)
When shooting outside on a bright day, most people would never consider using a flash. but they should. Often times, shots of images or people outside can have harsh shadows. One way to eliminate this is to use a flash to fill in some light on the shadows. Depending on the angle of the sunlight, you will want to angle your flash differently. Experiment with the flash slightly angled toward your subject and then increase that angle. View the shots in your LCD panel to see some differences.
TIP 1: Check that your flash is on. When working with bright light, when possible place your subject in shade and use your fill flash. Try taking the same shot without your fill flash and notice the difference. If you are shooting people you will notice a great deal of the shadows on faces tend to disappear with fill flash.
Create a Filter
Another one of the various digital slr photography tips for outdoor photography is to use a polarizer filter. This type of filter screws on to the end of your lens and creates a more dramatic effect while eliminating glare and unwanted reflection.
If you don't have a polarizer, you can achieve a similar result. Remove your sunglasses and place the lens of the glasses over your camera lens. Make sure the camera lens is fully covered by the sun glass lens and take the shot.
You may not see a huge difference in your LCD panel but chances are it's pretty small, but wait until you upload the shots onto your computer to really see a difference.
Digital SLR Photography Tips:
Shoot at Highest Resolution.
Lots of individuals start to freak out with the thought of shooting in RAW or using the highest resolution on their camera.
The most common complaint is that it requires too much memory. My answer to that is to invest in several high megapixel memory cards. Baseding upon the megapixels of your camera, somewhere between a 256MB card and a 512MB card will do nicely.
Shooting in camera RAW produces higher quality images than JPEG shots. RAW shots will require a converter software-- which most likely came as a CD in your camera box. That software must be downloaded onto your computer for you to view the images.
JPEG, however, requires less maintenance when you upload the shots onto your computer. So if you are interested in less hassle, you can still get a nice quality image from a JPEG file. If you don't anticipate using a photo software (like Photoshop) to change the appearance of your shot, or are going to use one but only for a few minor changes, JPEG shots are just fine. But again, use the highest resolution.
If you are at all inclined to shoot in camera RAW. remember this: One of the benefits of buying that expensive DSLR is it's ability to shoot with lots of megapixels. Get your money's worth and use that function. Sure, you will deplete your memory card faster when using high resolution, but the more megapixles, the greater the picture size can be while retaining the great clarity that you intended.
Digital SLR photography tips:
Practice Using Different White Balance Modes
The camera is set to Auto White Balance. However, the type and intensity of light changes from morning to night and place to place. It is up to you to maximize the light in a way to work well with our composition. Adjusting the white balance can help.
The camera also has other WB settings including, cloudy, sunny/daylight, shade, fluorescent and tungsten. Using the AWB will result in a cool tone. If you are trying to warm up a scene with warm tones, try setting the WB to the cloudy/overcast setting. If you are inside under fluorescent lighting, switch to fluorescent etc
. TIP: Try taking a shot of the same object with each white balance function and see the different results. When in doubt, check the camera manual for all of the WB settings available to you.
TIP: Back Up Your Photos - Among the very best Digital SLR photography tips I can give ...
Protect your pictures. Everyone knows someone whose hard drive has crashed and they "lost everything." That included pictures !!
Furthermore, there is always that person who accidentally erases the great pictures from the once in a lifetime trip.
It is easy and painless to backup your photos and this really is one of the most important digital slr photography tips around. There are products for your home and products you can travel with that make downloading pictures from your card to the drive simple. I travel with a Western Digital 'My Passport Digital SE.'
Keep the backup drive in a separate location - like a fireproof safe. Although I was married over a decade ago, before the popular demand of digital photography, my photographer did not keep his negatives in a separate location. His studio went up in fire and smoke with all of my wedding pictures and negatives etc. with it. A very sad day and a very hard lesson for all.
