5 Business Card Marketing Tips for New Small Businesses

In today's economy, starting a small business can seem like a daunting task. But many who start a small business say it is one of the best, most satisfying things they have done. It is critical to pay attention to your marketing efforts, especially in the start of your small business. One of the best ways to market your business is with your business card. #1. Always carry your business card. This is one of the best tips we can give you, because you'll be surprised at how well it works. You may be at the grocery store comparing melons, or at the gas station pumping gas, and you meet someone and have a great conversation. They ask what you do and you ask what they do. It turns out they are looking for your products or services, or they know someone who is. Or you simply make a great impression, and they take your card, remembering you later on when they do need your products or services.

#2. Don't act like a used car salesman with your business card. No offense to any used car salesmen – or actually to anyone at all. But aggressive, razzle dazzle techniques to get someone to take your business card and then to arm twist them into calling you simply don't work. You aren't going to get the business you'll appreciate. Just be yourself (we know this is something your mom would say) and hand out your card at the ideal times.

#3. Have an attractive, readable card. Notice we aren't telling you exactly what this has to look like, because for lots of businesses, this could be a different type of card than another. An accountant probably has a different looking card than a D.J.. Hire a graphic designer if you need one, but make sure your card looks attractive and is easy to read. Remember that lots of people simply cant read small fonts, and they wont make the effort to do so, they'll just find another company.

#4. Give your card to related businesses. This is one of the best things you can do. Make sure your vendors and all companies in the area have your business card. Let them know what you do and what type of products and services you offer. They see you regularly, and there is the potential for them to send business your way.

#5. Include a business card with every invoice or paid bill. This is another great technique. You would think someone receiving an invoice would have your business card, but sending them one also gives them a card they can pass along to someone they know who might appreciate your services. Sending out your business card with paid bills also may attract new business.

And a bonus tip that will help grow your business: give out business cards every day. Think of this like planting seeds. If you set the goal to give out your business card every day, then some of them will become customers. Even if you are a bit of an introvert, with this goal you'll probably try to have more conversations with more people. While not all of these will work successfully, some of them will. And your business will grow!
