"My Kids Hate Me" and How to Deal With That

Parenthood is not easy, especially when one starts to realize that inevitably "My kids hate me." The hurt that a mother or a father feels with this realization is strong coming from a bond that is just as deeply rooted. Children may show their hatred to their parents all the time, even say it to their parent's faces. More often than not, parents take this in stride and just do their job as parents because of course, it is the parent's job to let the children do what they often hate to do. But to make a general realization that "my kids hate me" is something else.
Parents should go past their immediate reaction and try to comprehend the situation. In a parent and child relationship, the parent should always take the mature stance no matter how immature he or she feels because there is a child at stake. So while there is frustration and hurt to be swallowed, parents should be adult enough to let the child know that they don't feel the same hatred as the child does. The next step is to ask why is the child acting this way despite the fact that it is almost impossible for him or her to manifest such kind of feeling as it is of a rather very strong nature. Hatred generally belongs to the grown ups. So when a child expresses hate, she or he is rather angry and trying to express in the best possible way what he feels. Children have no strength and it resonates in their feelings and their actions. They want to control things and see parents as the aggressors for imposing rules and regulations. Children don't know what or where their limits lie. They don' want to have restrictions in the first place. It is the job of the parents to set them and impose on the children no matter how much retaliations they get out of it.
"My kids hate me" may not be the pleasant realization there is but in order to have order and a sense of correctness, parents should be able to go past this. Children in their stages feel new feelings all the time, ones they cannot fathom much less express. In effect, they say cruel things like "I hate you," which could be the worst thing that could happen to parents specially that it comes from his or her own flesh and blood.
Tell the child that what he is feeling is common. Tell the child that what he is feeling is anger and not hatred. Most of all, ask the child why he is feeling that way so the root cause can be pinpointed at once. Let the child know why parents are imposing these rules so that early on, children will learn to understand why rules are set for their own good. This may be a long process but it will establish the relationship and the children might even be the ones asking why the next time they don't understand certain limitations. As parents, it is best to be honest, firm and most of all, consistent.
