Keeping Friends for a Better Life

Keeping friends may not be as easy as it sounds. With all that's going on in the world much more in people's personal lives, nurturing friendships sometimes takes the back seat. Worst even, sometimes keeping friendships is only done so as one can have people to run to in dire times. While it is true that one of the advantages of friendship is having people around during the worst times in life, keeping them around means more than just calling them to be there during those circumstances. If life is filled with ups and downs, then it would be nice to have friends to share everything with and go through these things with them. Here are ways to nurture the friendship especially during less dramatic times in life when neither one is required to be around each other.
Get in touch. If friendships fall out in the process, be the first one to call and apologize. The apology will go along way and no matter how deep the disappointment is at the other end of the line, it will be healed by that one call. Good friends always understand and accept each other's imperfections, and the need to keep away for a while -- even the need to not share things with other people. Keeping friends means letting the other know that he or she is just around when the other feels ready to talk. Thankfully there are already a lot of ways to get in touch in today's digital world. One can text, post a note in social networking portals or email.
Keeping friends is a proactive and conscious effort. A good friend doesn't wait for friends to make them feel guilty for the neglect. Good friends make the effort to contact each other. Little notes, small messages are better than the heaviness of wondering where friendships have been hiding all along with all the channels of communication available nowadays. Make time at the start of the day, or when everything has been wrapped up for the day. Calling a friend is a great personal reward.
If friendships fall out because of arguments, it doesn't' mean the end of the world or of the friendship for that matter. Healthy relationships have arguments and conflicts. And as in all conflicts and arguments, the best way to deal with it is by talking. Good friends are the best talkers in good times. Why not in bad times as well? Learn how to talk things out and argue in a way that both parties can air their side. This means that both people value the other's opinions even if they don't' agree with each other. This is so much better than the alternative of developing a grudge on a good friend and not talking to him or her until one develops negativity towards him in the process. What's worst, the other person doesn't know about it. One has not only wasted time stressing about it and planting seeds of hatred, one has also missed an opportunity to make the friendship stronger for having overcome disagreements and obstacles by just talking things over.
