Battles have been fought and extensive debates have been recollected, 14 billion years later, citizens of Earth are still asking – Why are we alive?
Buzzing, appealing, theorizing, and beseeching, everybody is familiar with the question and yet nobody is proficient enough to provide answers with definitude.
So, Why are we alive?
Some say it is because of biology. Humans are made of atoms that systematically became organs, bones, tendons and ligaments, etc. which collectively formed a fully functioning structure we call the body. This entire structure amounts to 100 trillion cells, which are the basic building blocks of life. We are wondrous creations – enriched by anatomy and physiology, and furnished by growth and development. Human beings are a flawless design created to march across the foggy plateau of reality.
Reality was derived from intentions... And for humans to have intentions, they must first survive. Survival has made us the species we are today. In fact, we have become life itself while surviving. But for humans to survive, they must remain functional and usable first.
Abraham Maslow, a famous professor, conceived a theory called the Hierarchy of Needs. It argues that humans are motivated by their needs. These are the things every human wants, that allow them to enjoy life.
The Hierarchy of Needs might help humans in discussing why we are alive.
The first and most fundamental are Physiological needs. These are the literal requirements for everyday survival, such as air, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, and excretion. If these requirements are not met, the human body simply cannot continue to function. Physiological needs are the most important among all others.
Next on the hierarchy are Safety needs, which include security of: body, employment, resources, morality, the family, health, and property. They are essential for survival, but are not as demanding as the metabolic needs.
Social needs follow, which are basically the need for belonging and/or love. Maslow suggested these needs to be less basic than Physiological and Safety needs. This involves friendship, families, Romeo and Juliet, and King Kong. Relationships help fulfill this need for companionship and acceptance. As they say, no man is an island.
After a human is satisfied by the first three needs, Esteem needs become increasingly significant. These needs reflect on personal worth, social recognition, and achievement. Examples include self-esteem, confidence, respect of others, and respect by others.
Self-actualization needs are the highest level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Self-actualizing humans are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested in fulfilling their potential. Maslow described it as an ongoing process involved in a cause outside the human body. The subjects of morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, and acceptance of facts are central to this level.
Humans eat food, go to work, are entertained and sometimes entertain others. Listening to music, watching movies, going to a party with friends, marrying the love of your life, and having sex – aren't these the things that make humans enjoy life?
So, are we here on this planet just to survive? "No!" exclaimed the dinosaurs.
Then what could it be? Why are we alive?
Have you ever set a goal and accomplished it? Have you ever spelled the word purpose on purpose? Maybe these are questions we should be asking ourselves to find out why are we alive?
