If you are thinking of holiday vacationing or buying a property in the Languedoc Roussillon in the South of France, then let us tell you why you should! This is because you will be hard pressed to find any other location with so much culture, tradition, picturesque landscapes, and more and here are some of the things we love:
The Vineyards
Languedoc Roussillon is a region known for its wine production. In fact some argue that it is responsible for the glut of wine that makes South of France a major manufacturer of fine wines. Languedoc Roussillon has 740,300 acres (2,996 km2) of vineyards. To put things in perspective this is about three times the size of the vineyards of Bordeaux. Now, some of you may not know but vineyards are best grown on fair weather and low lying slopes as far as the eye can see. This means a picture perfect environment and a lot of wine manufacturers, big and small, most of whom will allow you to take a look at their wine production and of course sample their wines. For wine collectors and tasters, this is also a great place to stock up on fine wines from big names and little known manufacturers. Remember, there is more joy in finding a little known or a hard to find label that has a unique, distinct but excellent taste.
The Culture
The South of France is rich in culture and tradition. Languedoc Roussillon is no exception. Here you can find the birthplace of Occitan literature, which experts believe gave rise to the vernacular of France. This fights hand in hand with the Catalans, inhabiting the southerm most region of the Languedoc Roussillon and a culture, language and lifestyle all of it's own.
The Languedoc Roussillion is also birthplace of the Fauvism art movement (French for 'wild beast') with artists such as Matisse, Derain and Dufy preferring the region and particularly the coastal fishing village of Collioure and the market town of Ceret because of the 'clarity of the light' and 'intense colours'!
Rugby
If you are into Rugby then the Languedoc-Roussillon is most definitely the place to be!. Cities throughout the region; Nimes, Beziers, Narbonne and Perpignan are passionate about their Rugby and you'll find plenty of good rugby bars and always a game to watch – try and get tickets for either USAP or the Catalan Dragons, both based in Perpignan as you're always guaranteed a great game and excellent atmosphere!
Beaches
The Languedoc Roussillon has some of THE most stunning beaches in France and unlike it's other Med neighbor on the Cote d'Azur, you'll find them long, wide, spacious, safe and sandy – perfect for family holidays, soaking up the sun, playing beach games, building sand castles or what ever else takes your fancy.
The region also has a high number 'naturist beaches' Cap'd'Agde and Leucate are in fact the largest naturist beaches in Europe, are private and well signed to ensure that the hapless holiday maker doesn't stumble upon them and get a bit of a shock!
Finally and probably the biggest reason why I love living in the Languedoc Roussion region of Southern France has to be the food!
I love the Mediterranean style of eating with lots of fresh vegetables, olive oil, sea food, salads, breads and cheeses and the fact that everything is so much about 'family' all pulled together by eating!
Whether you pass a morning at one of the fantastic markets of the region - I love Narbonne's indoor food market and also the market of St.Laurent de la Salanque, where the markets stalls spread through the streets every Thursday and Sunday – a real opportunity to people watch!
You'll never struggle to find a reasonably priced but good quality restaurant. Often you'll find the best value at lunch times by taking advantage of the restaurant's menu of the day (when we first arrived we thought these were just for tourists!), these generally have a grill and fish of the day along with an entrée and or desert.
