Introduction
Casting is a procedure which was developed almost 6000 years ago. It is done by pouring a liquid of the anticipated material into a mold and allowing the liquid to solidify. Typically, the materials that are used in casting should not be easily burned and should be malleable to an extent. Today, the top materials to be used for casting purposes are clay, plaster, epoxy, and concrete. Casting is patronized by most consumers because of the relativity low price of the products compared to the mass manufacturing of the products using normal means. Casting can be separated into two sorts; metal casting and resin casting. Metal casting uses metal while resin casting uses plaster or plastic resin. Aluminum die casting is one type of casting that uses casting and this type of casting is used mostly on auto parts and speaker parts.
Applications of Casting
Because of its relatively low price, most companies chose to use products made from casting in producing their own products. Such companies are frequently car manufacturers, airplane manufacturers, and electronic manufacturers. Of course, these companies still test their products to guaranteed the quality of the products. This is particularly true for airplane manufacturers because any slight miscalculation would have disastrous results. Casting is also used on military vehicles mainly because of the surplus and its low cost.
Unlike the airplane manufacturers, the military vehicle manufacturers have less worries because their products do not have to survive an huge amount of pressure. Then again, their problem is that their vehicles should be strong and sturdy enough to last long in combat. As for the electronics, specifically the speaker parts, the products should be able to convey waves to a degree which would not impede the sound fashioned from the other parts of the speaker. Aluminum is a decent choice for these parts because it allows waves to travel completely within its composition. Aluminum is also a good choice for airplane parts and military parts because of the ease of combining two aluminum metals together resulting to a much more durable and consistent metal. Aluminum can also be easily smelted down if ever defects are found with the finished product. This effectively reduces the cost of buying new metals every time a defect is found.
The Process of Casting
The process of using casting for producing metals is called die casting. This process is similar to the usual casting process with an exception that this process uses high pressure to force the molten liquid into the mould cavity. Aluminum is the metal of choice for this process because of its abundance and cheap cost. The process is divided into 4 parts; preparation, filling, ejection, and shakeout. Preparation includes spraying oil into the mould cavity for temperature maintenance and for easier removal of the finished product. Afterwards, the mould cavity is filled with the prepared die under high pressure. The high pressure should be constant until the die solidifies. Afterwards, the dies are opened and shots are ejected. Finally, the shakeout is done to remove the residue from the shot. The scraps can be melted again for reuse. Basically, the process of casting is done and inspections are undertaken for faults and quality control.
