Most adults know that it takes the joining of a male's semen and at least one egg before a female can get pregnant.
Fewer people may know that a woman may only deliver one egg during her monthly cycle while a male can release upwards of a million sperm cells during each climatic release.
While this scarce production of a woman's egg contributes to its preciousness; it also, in many cases, contributes to the felling of frustration and despair that 20% of women experience who can't seem to get pregnant after many desperate attempts.
Although the above facts are generally agreed upon, there are many disagreements as to which time of the month is best for intercourse which will lead to fertilization and conception. How can knowing this increase the odds of a female's egg becoming fertilized?
What is the duration of the fertile window?
A female's productive window (known as the fertile window) consists of six days within her menstrual cycle. This window is made up of the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. This is the most likely time segment for her to get pregnant.
Since a female's egg only survives for about 12 hrs after it is delivered, it is critical that fertilization takes place within this time frame.
The main point is that freshly ejaculated sperm is not immediately able to fertilize an egg. It must first go through some changes once inside the female's reproductive tract called capacitation.
These changes make the sperm mobile and effective at penetrating the egg. The capacitation process can take 10 hours before a male's sperm is able to actually fertilize the egg. All is not lost since a man's sperm usually can survive up to at least five days inside the female's reproductive area.
Also of note is the fact that the pre-fertilized egg can be selective as to which sperm it will accept for fertilization.
For these reasons, the 5 days prior to ovulation are very important.
The mature semen (semen that has definitely endured the capacitation process) must be standing by and capable of fertilizing the egg if conception and a successful pregnancy is to occur.
As soon as ovulation starts, the sperm has a very short fertile window in which to mature itself and to begin to fertilize the egg.
Before ovulation or after?
Couples looking to get pregnant naturally are interested in knowing when is the right time during the fertile window to have intercourse that will lead to fertilization.
The day that ovulation begins is often thought to be the best time. However, medical research published by the Journal of Reproductive Medicine reports that this is not necessarily the best time for conception. In fact, the day before ovulation actually has a higher chance of conceiving than the day of.
Moreover, the closer to the front end of the fertility window, researchers believe increases the chance of a successful fertilization and conception than later. Each day before ovulation increases the chances of pregnancy.
The conclusion to be drawn from this study points to the fact that intercourse beginning three to four days before ovulation and performed up through the first day of ovulation offers the highest probability for the occurrence of a pregnancy.
Ah, ah maybe your initial reaction to this information regarding when you should take advantage of the fertile window but there's something else you need to know if you haven't realized it already.
When is the best time to get pregnant?
Now that you know the critical time frame for getting pregnant, the next variable is to know when your ovulation starts. However, calculating your ovulation cycle is not always that easy to detect.
Nevertheless, there are basically three methods used for determining when this fertile cycle starts:
1. Guessing
2. Natural biological rhythm methods and
3. Those more scientific
And of course you'd want to choose the method that provides the most accurate results. After all, missing this window of opportunity will only delay conception.
There's more to consider when trying to become pregnant in addition to knowing what days to make love on. For example, it has also been discovered that another aspect to getting pregnant has to do with the quantity and quality of the cervical mucus within the female's vaginal canal.
Cervical mucous perform two critical functions
It serves as a lubricant for the sperm and helps it to travel through the vaginal canal on its way to fertilizing the egg.
Additionally, it consists of nutrients that assist the semen to survive during this stage.
As you might conclude, planning intercourse during the fertile window and when there is healthy fertile cervical mucus is the most effective time and condition to getting pregnant.
Additionally, research from the University of North Carolina concluded after studying various sexual intercourse patterns that healthy cervical mucus was more important to conception than the actual day that intercourse occurred on.
This leads to the summary that if a couple made love on a day during the fertile window when the female's cervical mucus is healthy and fertile that conception is more likely to occur regardless of the exact day that intercourse happens on.
