When looking for wedges, most golf players would usually buy a single and it is usually the pitching wedge. But smarter players would like to be precise in striking the ball and therefore acquire the rest of the types – the lob wedge, sand wedge and the gap wedge.
Pitching Wedges
These are the most common type of wedges and the most used. Having lofts from 44 to 50 degrees, they have the smallest angles. For this, pitching wedges are the ones used for distances about 100 yards. You'll see golfers usethem often when they have to deliver approach shots towards the green, for shots that they want to be low, and shots through long bunkers and sands.
These wedges have small bounce measurements- typically from two to five degrees. This property allows these wedges to get right below the ball and still make hard contact with it.
Sand Wedges
A sand wedge is what they use to get balls from being sand-trapped but still give good results as one can get from striking from the rough and the fairway. Their lofts are between 54 and 58 degrees. This characteristic allows these wedges to get the ball quickly off the air.
Sand wedges are made to make a ball that has been struck cover a maximum distance of 90 yards and at least 80 yards in a single full-swing strike.
Sand wedges can effectively deliver the ball out from the sand, a task that even pitching wedges fail to satisfactorily accomplish. They have the highest bounce of all wedges – ten to sixteen degrees. They also have the largest sole width. This makes them able to keep the club from burrowing underneath the sand.
Owing to the way sand wedges are designed, they send the ball fast to the air and make it spin. Therefore, they can make the ball stop quickly as soon as it hits the ground.
Lob Wedges
These are the wedges with the highest lofts. Their lofts are 57 degrees or more. They also cause to spin the ball up in the air but they are better than sand wedges in their ability to stop the ball from rolling on the ground. In fact, the ball hardly rolls when golfers use these wedges.
A full swing with the use of lob wedges makes the ball fly into the air for a maximum of about 65 yards only. For this, lob wedges are used for light shots on the greens. They are also good for deep rough terrain and also, when the ball has to be stopped quickly.
Every lob wedges has sharp forward edges and a smaller sole breadth, which is good if one would need to send the ball to the air easily.
Gap Wedges
Gap wedges serve to fill the gap between the versatility of pitching wedges and the versatility of sand wedges. These are the wedges used for higher but shorter shots and lower but longer shots. Without gap wedges, a golf player can't be fully ready.
