Losing weight became a huge trend that these days there are more kinds of diets than the letters in the alphabet. As the media still keeps sensationalizing their idea of beauty, more and more people become addicted to dieting-hopping between one health craze to another , hoping that the next diet fad will finally be The One.
Over the years, these new diets have birthed so many ridiculous myths have accumulated on the internet. Here are some of the more popular myths, and why people shouldn't believe them.
"Drinking cold water after eating a meal will solidify fats in your body!"
This dieting myth states that people should only drink warm or hot beverages during and after eating, as cold water will solidify the fats and oils in the food. They even say that this is an ancient Chinese secret, since the Chinese only drink warm tea with their meals.
Actually, the reason the Chinese drink tea during meals is because they believe that warming the body is a sign of life. The Chinese believed that man is a combination of four elements: wind, water, earth and fire. Fire is the one that gives life, and therefore every meal should include something hot to drink, like soup or tea. As for cold water solidifying the fats inside the stomach: even a pure chunk of glacial ice will have difficulty achieving that, as the body's internal temperature remains at a constant 37C, or 98.6F-just a tad below boiling point.
"My Body Mass Index will tell me if I'm overweight or not!"
Surprised to see this as a myth? It's no wonder-health and medicine have been using this outdated system for all these years. Actually , there's an ongoing debate whether the Body Mass Index (BMI) is a reliable criteria for malnutrition. The premise of BMI is that people of a certain height should only weigh within a specific range; anything not within that range will result in either being under or overweight. Many people still use BMI as an indicator that their diet works, but sadly, this dieting myth is nothing but misleading.
Want to know why? Because human bodies are made up of different masses and volumes that get burned at different rates. It's common knowledge that overweight people weigh more than slim people, but bodies aren't made up of just fat, meat and bones. The human body is almost 75% water, meaning three-quarters of the weight is made up of that water. So when a lady goes to a sauna and sweats inside for an hour, don't be surprised to find out that she's lost some weight-she sweated out the water in her body, not fat.
But what about those who actually slimmed down after dieting? Their BMIs showed that they're within the normal range for their height, so that should mean something, right? Wrong. People forget that the main functions of fat are to provide heat against cold temperatures, and to provide extra storage of energy. It's the same reason why animals gorge themselves before they sleep for the winter.
What does that tell people? Simple-if the diet plan involves fasting to break down the body's stores of fat, that diet is a big, fat, overweight lie. Why? Because fats are the body's extra storage of energy, not its main source. So when people starve themselves, instead of supposedly breaking down fats, what their bodies do is break down the muscles instead. Muscles are made of proteins which are easier and faster to break down than fatty lipids. Muscles are also heavier than fats; it's the reason why those who starve themselves drop pounds dramatically, but still look flabby and not lean as what the diet claimed they should be. They end up as fat-wrapped skeleton that happened to be within BMIs "normal" range.
There are many more myths circulating the internet-do not immediately believe what people say! Choose the appropriate form of diet and exercise, stick with the regimen, and keep healthy!
