As the world keeps getting bombarded with the mass media's concept of what's beautiful and acceptable, and what's not, more and more people have become slaves of various diets. The scary part is that most people don't know what a proper diet is, and what they're doing to themselves could potentially harm them.
A diet is the overall food, nutrient and mineral intake of a person. That sounds so different from what people think it means, doesn't it? They assume that 'dieting' means fasting, or not eating after 6 pm, or only consuming meat. That's not proper diet at all.
The body requires many things in order to be at its optimal efficient state. It needs carbohydrates from rice, bread and pasta for energy to burn. It needs protein from meats, beans and other legumes to build up the muscles that make us move. And it needs fats from milk, butter and oil to provide temperature control and extra stores of emergency energy.
When people go on a diet, they essentially remove one or more of these requirements from the body. Is that a bad thing? Yes!
There are many illnesses that are linked to insufficient intake of these requirements, such as Marasmus and Kwashiorkor disease. And if not given proper medical care, these can lead to death-death by dieting.
Why has dieting become so dangerous? Mostly because people go overboard with their dieting. They treat their diet as their lifeblood; the thing that fuels their veins. Not only will this cause serious physical setbacks , but it can also change their mental perception. Many eating disorders are associated with fierce dieting. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are only two of the many categorized and uncategorized types of eating disorders that are recognized by the DSM-IV. These psychological disorders revolve around the fact that they view their weights and bodies as overweight and ugly, and so they go to extreme lengths at dieting. And since most mental disorders aren't easily recognized, by the time these people are diagnosed, it's already too late . Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are two very treatable diseases. But given a good head start, sufferers can expect other complications, and even death.
How many famous people have died of the complications of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa? How many more people should die before people realize that a true, proper diet requires careful planning and consultation?
A proper dietary meal is something that should contain all of the essential food groups, nutrients and minerals recommended for each person. It doesn't have to be bland; food can be delicious and nutritious, too.
As more and more people are willing to try dieting, it's best if people will get knowledge and learn the basics of dieting, for their own well-being.
