Making TV commercials is the advertising technique that has granted the most benefits to businesses big and small, as well as to other agencies that use them. Plenty of money and time is spent on the making of a good TV commercial, but if successfully executed, millions of people will become entranced. Without advertisements shown on TV, it will be hard to know what is going on in the market right now. Primarily, we would not know what goods to buy.
Why are TV commercials the most popular form of advertising? Ask yourself that question. When you hear the word 'advertisement', what is the first thing that comes to your mind? You know it - it's TV, unless you happen not to watch it often. However, many people do, and TV advertisers act on that assumption. The average TV viewer spends 41/2 hours in front of the tube per day; the number of viewing hours can be bigger during weekends. Television is within the reach of millions of viewers, so if you can advertise a product through TV, you can command the attention of millions and turn a good fraction of them into customers.
TV commercials are made in a highly systematic manner. First, for a specific product, market research is done to determine how the product appeals to potential consumers as well as to know the particular demographic to which the product appeals most. Based on the information gathered, the steps in the making of TV advertisements are then followed. The commercial is conceptualized; the script is written; the setting of the advertisement is intricately planned; actors rehearse their roles; the commercial is shot; graphics and special effects are added as needed. (Sometimes advertisements for some products, especially for children's products, are animated.)
The main advantage of TV advertising over other forms of advertising (probably with the exception of online advertising) is its reach. Millions of people can view a commercial on TV as it plays. When it is repetitively seen, its ability to persuade increases. (Repetition is something that applies especially to a particular type of TV commercial - the infomercial.) While Internet advertising can reach millions of people too, people online aren't as sustained as viewing advertisements as do people watching TV.
Some people, however, complain about the usual features of TV commercials. They insist that ads on TV, in general, do not show enough of the important information about the product. They say that commercials on TV are focused more in persuasion than in making people thoughtful buyers. TV advertising, however, is generally good for the viewers as they can discern which products to buy. There are, however, some disadvantages which are inherent to commercials on TV, such as being hard to modify in case they fall flat, the difficulty of making them, and the sheer amount of money spent. Good makers of commercials can surmount them, anyway.
Nevertheless, TV commercials have been with us for many decades already; it is hard to imagine what our world would be without them. The best thing we can do is to make the most of the information they provide while analyzing every product featured in these ads rationally.
