Shiatsu, the popular traditional Japanese therapeutic massage developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi is actually based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and works on all the Acupressure points. Shiatsu is the Japanese word for 'finger pressure' and essentially uses the finger and the palm to apply deep penetrating pressure on certain points along the central and autonomic nervous systems. These Shiatsu points are basically the same as the Acupuncture points. Namikoshi just added a new mystical dimension to this ancient healing art by incorporating a new philosophy in the use of the hands for the healing therapy. Shiatsu was founded on the belief that the hands are sensitive and can easily discern the flow of life energy (Qi to the Chinese) within the body. Shiatsu makes use of both hands in all its applications. 'As one hand listens, the other acts' is the underlying doctrine on which Shiatsu was created. Shiatsu practitioners profess that the hands can detect imbalances in the life energy. And like Acupressure, shiatsu's use of 'finger pressure' harmonize the energy flow and put the body into balance once more.
While the Chinese Acupressure treatments are more straight-forward and business-like in its treatment, Shiatsu uses varying rhythms and different pressures and techniques in its application. Shiatsu can be likened to music where the same notes are combined to produce distinct tones.
Much like Acupuncture, Shiatsu treatments are meant to harmonize the Yin and the Yang forces inside and within the body. Like Acupuncture, Shiatsu stimulates the natural healing ability of our body. The secret to its success lies in keeping the body and mind in a deep and relaxed state even after treatment to achieve maximum benefits from it.
Unlike Acupuncture and Acupressure, however, there is no scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of Shiatsu treatments. Its success and popularity as an alternative form of healing is often tied up to the success of the Chinese ancient healing art since they basically have similar treatment methods. Likewise, Shiatsu is indicated for relaxation and for pain relief such as headache, back pain, PMS, neck and shoulder pain, and arthritis pain. It is also effective for treating insomnia, depression, poor digestion, anxiety, stress, and even constipation. In short, where the Chinese treatment method is effectively used, Shiatsu treatment may also be prescribed.
Expected results from a Shiatsu treatment may include relief from pain, clearer mind and calmer mood, increased flexibility. Deep, restful sleep can be had more easily too after Shiatsu treatment. Although a few patients may encounter muscle stiffness and even feel tired after the treatment, these conditions are only temporary while the body recover its balance, and will soon disappear after 1 or 3 days.
Shiatsu is considered by many as an offshoot of its Chinese counterpart. They both work with the meridian or the invisible channels through which the life energy Qi flows. They serve the same purpose of bringing the Yin and Yang elements inside and within our bodies back into balance. What differentiates Shiatsu is the manner pressure is applied on the pressure points. Whereas Acupressure uses the finger or knuckle to 'press, hold and release' using moderate pressure, Shiatsu uses the finger, palm, and sometimes the elbow and the knees to apply varying degrees of pressure using different rhythms and with different styles and techniques. In short, Shiatsu brought variation and added more oriental mystique to the rather straightforward Chinese method of treatment.
