There are over 400 Acupuncture points on our bodies. Unless you want to be an expert in this ancient art of healing, learning all of them by heart is a tough task to tackle. For self treatment, however, you need only to be familiar with certain Acupressure points that can be used for the relief of the more common ailments - specifically for the pain relief and stress.
The real challenge at the onset is locating where these pressure points are. These points are usually beneath major muscle groups or near bone structures. Once these points have been located you can apply moderate pressure to stimulate them. Press and hold for a while then release the hold gradually. You do this with your thumb at a 90 degree angle from the surface of the skin.
Below are some simple applications you can use for treating yourself to relieve pain and stress in various parts of the body. Each of them discusses the Acupressure points involved, where to locate them, and the various ailments for which they serve as a cure. Do not be confused nor overwhelmed by the Chinese names used to call each of the pressure points and their literal English translations. The important thing is to know exactly where they are located and what ailments they remedy.
For Upper Body Pain
The targeted Acupressure point is tagged as LI 4 (Large Intestine 4 Meridian) or He Gu in Chinese and 'Joining of the Valleys' in English. The point is located at the topside of your backhand on the muscle bulge between the index finger and the thumb. Locate the spot where the bones of the thumb and the index finger meet and with your thumb press towards the bone of the index finger. Hold for one minute then gradually release your hold. Do the same thing with the other hand. This application relieves stress and produces a calming effect. It is also good for pain relief.
Another targeted pressure point for upper body pain is GV 20 (Governing Vessel 20 Meridian) or Bai Hui in Chinese which translates to 'Hundred Convergence' in English. It is located at the top of the head at the midpoint of the lines connecting the summits of both ears. Again, you press and hold for one minute or until you feel a pulse at this point. This application is effective against headache, blurred vision, nasal obstruction, dizziness, tinnitus, seizures, and windstroke.
For Lower Body Pain
For lower body pain, one of the targeted pressure points is ST 36 (Stomach Meridian). Its Chinese name is Zu San Li which translates to Leg Three Li in English. It is located at the anterior side of the lower leg one finger down from the top of the tibia. Massaging this pressure point will relieve gastric pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and all issues involving the stomach.
Acupressure Points for Migraines and Headaches
There are several pressure points you can use for headaches and migraine. You can use them singly or in combination with other pressure points. Treating severe headache and migraines must start with pressure points in the legs. They include B 62 located beneath the outer ankle. Other pain relieving Acupressure points that can be effective against head ache and migraine includes GV 40, GV 41, LI 4, GV 16
