One outstanding feature of Acupressure is that it can be self-taught and self administered. It does not need any special training or skills to apply it unlike Acupuncture and Moxibustion (which can only be applied by a certified acupuncturist or a Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist). There is also no problem about not being able to do it right the first time. There is nothing wrong with doing it over and over again until you get it right. The worst thing that can happen is getting a sore index finger or knuckles.
The hardest part of learning this ancient art of healing is locating of Acupressure points. There are over 400 pressure points in the body with each one connected to a specific organ. A specific pressure point may be connected to several organs through the same meridian or channel where life energy is said to flow. In other words a single pressure point can be used to relieve several ailments and/or symptoms. Knowing all these pressure points by heart and learning what ailments each of them is used is where the real challenge lies. To be an expert in this field will require acquiring more knowledge like learning the theories and treatment protocols. It involves a learning curve can be truly overwhelming.
This should not be a problem though unless you intend to become an expert in this field. For self treatment and home remedies all you need to do is have an Acupressure handbook handy or have several bookmarked pages of websites containing treatment information for common ailments using this alternative form of medicine. The tough task is in locating where these pressure points are. Locating these points is really an art where the skills required are learned and polished through constant practice. But you need not worry about this because you can simply keep on applying pressure around the area where the pressure point is supposed to be until the symptoms subsides or disappears altogether. In time, you will be adept in stimulating your own pressure points to relieve minor symptoms with greater accuracy. Word of caution though before you fully embrace Traditional Chinese Medicine for self-treatment – never use it as a replacement for standard medical treatment and always consult a doctor if the symptoms persist.
Selecting, locating, and stimulating these points is an art which beginners may find too complex. But there are Acupressure points that are generally useful and do not require a comprehensive diagnosis prior to use. For easier identifications they can be divided into: Chest and Abdomen Points; Head, Scalp, and Shoulder Points; Arm and Hand Points; Leg and Feet Points. With a well illustrated Acupuncture handbook, you should be able to determine the location of these pressure points without difficulty.
Application of pressure is done using the tip of your index finger, or your knuckle, or even the eraser end of a pencil. You simply hold or massage any of these points for 3 to 5 minutes (or even longer) until the symptoms fade away or totally disappear. Apply deep probing pressure. However, there are conditions where you should not attempt to apply Acupressure like if you happen to have a heart condition. You should not also attempt to apply it immediately or within 20 minutes after a heavy exercise and after having a heavy meal.
