With the cost of medications skyrocketing beyond the reach of ordinary consumers, people are turning more and more to other forms of treatment for their ailments. Alternative forms of medication such as herbal medicines and aromatherapy have grown in popularity of late. People have begun to warm up to Oriental Medicine too, especially to Traditional Chinese Medicine which includes Acupressure, Acupuncture, and Moxibustion.
All three are traditional forms of medicine that have been in use in China for over 5,000 years. These three ancient arts of healing have a common approach to healing the body of its ailments and that is to ensure the unhampered flow of life force energy known as Qi through the meridians. The meridians are invisible channels that connect our organs to different parts of the body and through which Qi flows. All three methods target the same points located in the meridians where the life force energy Qi are said to collect. Traditional Chinese Medicine works in the belief that all ailments are the result of the Qi being blocked and prevented to flow freely through its channels. By targeting these pressure points, the Qi is made to flow freely once more thus bringing the body back to a balanced state.
The significant and immediate result from the use of these three ancient healing arts is relief from pain and stress that patients experience. While they have the same healing objective and use the same acupressure points, they differ in the method of application.
Acupuncture, as the name implies, punctures the skin through these pressure points using thin needles. It is considered as invasive by medical practitioners and is rarely used for pain management. Acupuncture is resorted to only when all other medication has failed. Also, because the insertion of the fine needles has to be precise it can only be applied by a trained acupuncturist or a specialist on Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Moxibustion involves the application of heat on acupressure points to stimulate the flow of the life force energy Qi. The word is the combination of the words Moxa (or mugwort, a herb) and combustion. Application can be done through three ways:
By burning a small amount of Moxa placed on top of the targeted pressure point. Unfortunately, this method usually leaves a scar.
By using a Moxa stick burning in one end while the other end touches the pressure point until the skin reddens.
By using acupuncture needles where Moxa wrapped around the top of an acupuncture needle is burned while the needle is inserted on a pressure point.
Even without the needles, Moxibustion is still considered invasive and like acupuncture, it should be applied only by trained specialists in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Acupressure involves the application of pressure on specific points of the body to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. Using your fingertips, these points are pressed to release muscular tension and to enhance the blood circulation. Unlike Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Acupressure can be applied without special training. In fact, it can be self taught and can even be self administered. What's more, it has been proven to be just as effective as Acupuncture and Moxibustion in relieving pain and stress. In health care institutions, it can be applied by a nurse and is even an integral part of pain management regimens in some institutions.
