You must have heard of acupressure. If not, then surely you must have heard of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has, by now, accepted and recognized in the Western World. Acupressure is an ancient healing art which has its origins 5,000 years ago in Asia as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine's body healing methods.
Acupressure involves the application of pressure on specific points of the body to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. Using your fingertips, these points (known as acupressure points) are pressed to release muscular tension and to enhance the circulation of blood. Practitioners of this ancient healing art believe that in doing so, the body's life force energy which they call Qi is brought back into balance which promotes health and healing.
Yin, Yang, and Qi – The Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The concept of Yin and Yang is the main foundation of Traditional Medicine. Literally, Yin and Yang means dark and light. Yin stands for dark or any negative principle in nature while Yang stands for light or anything positive in nature. In Chinese Philosophy, these two are not diametrically opposed to each other but more of being complimentary opposites. They are interdependent with each other - one cannot exist without the other. They are in a constant state of change (ebbing and flowing) perpetually trying to achieve a balance with each other. At certain points in time either one will manifest itself more than the other.
Chinese philosophers believe that everything in this universe has both Yin and Yang aspects - including our body. If there is an abnormal imbalance of Yin and Yang in our body then our health suffers and sickness sets in. The concept of Yin and Yang is about attaining balance and maintaining balance in the all aspects of life.
Traditional Chinese Medicine also preaches that our body possesses a vital life force energy that flows through invisible energy flow lines. The called the life Energy 'Qi' or 'Chi' and the energy flow lines as meridians. They believe that there are 14 meridians that connect our internal organs to different parts of our body. They theorized that if at any time the flow of life force energy (Qi) is blocked at any point on any of the meridians this will cause an illness. This may develop into a disease that may affect any part of the body along the blocked meridian.
How Acupressure Maintains the Balance of Life Force Energy (Qi) in our Body
Traditional Chinese Medicine also says that there exist certain points along the 14 meridians where life force energy (Qi) collects.. The imbalance of Yin and Yang leads to either an excess of or a deficiency of Qi at these points. These imbalances are manifested as symptoms. An analysis of these symptoms will reveal to the TCM practitioner the cause of the imbalance. He will then determine a combination of acupressure points to work on (applying pressure on these points using the fingertips) to relieve the symptoms and to restore the balance of life force energy (Qi) in the affected area.
The amazing thing about acupressure is it works. Nobody really fully understands how. Some says it induces the body to release endorphins that ultimately relieves the pain. The TCM practitioners insist it is the balance between Yin and Yang. But whatever it is, this ancient art of healing simply works as pain relief and to release stress. What is more, there are people who can attest to this fact.
