There are two ways to do the Hardieplank siding installation. The first choice is the easier of the two but it would be the more expensive decision. This means hiring a professional to do the job. This decision would save you time although this would also cost you money. However, if you've had previous experience installing this kind of house siding then you might want to do the job yourself in order to cut expenses and to gain experience.
The first step would be to go to the side of your house where you'd like to begin the installation. You should start at lowest point of the area you'd be changing. This area should also be level so you'll have to check for that before you start working. There should also be a water table trim located at your wall's bottom edge. Place a starter strip above the water table trim. This starter strip should measure 1 inches. To create this starter strip, use a circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade to detach the strip from a Hardieplank siding.
There are two ways to hammer the planks into place in the Hardieplank siding installation process. You can decide to use blind nailing or you can use face nailing. Blind nailing is usually recommended. This method involves hiding the nails from view by putting a layer of planks above the nails to conceal them. Face nailing, in the meantime, involves placing the nails on the face of the plank leaving the nails visible to the human eye. If you choose the face nailing method, you should use 2-inch siding nails or the 6d nails. However, if you use blind nailing, you should use 11 gauge roofing nails for the job.
The first set of planks should be nailed to the studs. Place the nails 3/4 to 1 inch away from the bottom of the plank if you're using the face nailing technique. If you're using the blind nailing technique, then you should place the nails 1 inch away from the top of the plank. Take care in driving the nails because if you hammer the nails with too much strength, you might leave dents on the planks.
Once you reach the end of a plank, your next step would be to measure a distance of 3/8 inch from the end of the plank and drive a nail through it. Place the ends of two planks together as closely as possible so there is some contact between them because if there's a gap left in between these planks, you'd have to seal this gap with water-resistant sealant before you finish.
The last step of the Hardieplank siding installation process would be to continue this whole process of nailing the planks with a minimum of 1 1/4 inch overlap between the planks. Remember that in order to prevent moisture from coming into the walls, you would have to stagger the joints.
You should also allow space for clearances. The recommended clearances are 1-2 inches from your HardiePlanks to the roof, deck, or walk of the house and 6 inches from the finished grade of your home's exterior. You should also use eye protection to protect your eyes from dust or any harmful materials. You should also wear ear protection if you're going to be using power tools in the Hardieplank siding installation process.
