More than five millenniums ago, the Chinese developed an alternative way of healing through acupressure which uses finger pressure on certain points on the body's 14 key meridian lines. Soldiers who fought in battles got relief from chronic pain when these points were pressed. After hundreds of years, medicine men and sages came up with a map having the different points in the body and which parts they treat. A document was written on this matter sometime 2697 to 2596 B.C. during the reign of Emperor Huang Ti. In the 17th century, this alternative healing method was brought to the West when Christians went to the East for conversion purposes and they went back home with it.
It is said that if the body's meridian lines were blocked, a natural energy called qi would not be able to go through, thus illnesses would arise. Acupressure would release these blockages thus the body would be able to naturally heal itself. These include nausea, menstrual cramps, pain and headache. When the points are applied pressure on for 30 seconds to a minute, blood circulation becomes normal thus leading to increased well-being. Scientific studies also show that this form of massage can develop and strengthen the immune system, heighten energy and fight stress and anxiety.
The acupressure points can be massaged by a trained acupuncturist but people can do this on their own if they know where their pressure points are. knowledge of this can be researched in books or journals on alternative medicine or in reputable and trustworthy websites on the subject matter. Once a person has gained full knowledge on this, he can apply the technique in the comfort of his own house.
It is said that there are around 365 healing pressure points in the body. These points lead to certain organs and when pressure is applied on them for 30 to 120 seconds, there would be pain relief and healing given to the connecting organ. These points should be massaged in tiny circles and then the pressure applied should eventually be lessened for the next half minute.
There are different types of this alternative form of treatment and one of them is shiatsu. This involves applying pressure on the points and then massaging them. Another type is reflexology which focuses on both the hands and the feet. After a stressful day at work, it can be relieving to receive this type of treatment as it promotes a good sense of well-being.
There are different tools used in this Chinese alternative medicine. These include massage rollers, Acu ball and energy rollers. The one that uses non-invasive needle treatment on pressure points is acupuncture.
After receiving this type of treatment, it is normal to feel sore or bruised, especially on the points massaged. One would also feel dizzy and light-headed. This is normal, temporary and not at all dangerous and side effects are almost always rare. The patient would feel his exhaustion, tension and anxiety fading.
With acupressure, it is scientifically proven that one would gain instant relief in a cheap and safe way.
