My test drives of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The latest Grand Cherokee is a welcome addition to the family of 4x4s. It was much awaited by the Grand Cherokee fans since its last model year, 2006. I have always been a fan of Jeep and was keen to get my hands on the new model and see what the new Grand had to offer.

It was a pleasant surprise to see that they had maintained the same look of toughness and muscle which the Cherokee is known for. The first impression of the interior too made it obvious that changes had been made to improve upon the earlier criticism that there was not enough room inside.

The specifications of the engine have also been changed and the base model comes with a 3.6 liter V6 which has been made this year, there is an option of a 3.8 liter VC6 as well that puts out 202 hp. Of course I would personally prefer the 5.7 liter V8 that provides a staggering 360 hp.

I still found the option of getting a 2WD in the new Grand Cherokee somewhat pointless for a vehicle as large as it is. However, the verdict can only be given on how the vehicle handles on and off the road.

On a normal road, the new Grand Cherokee gave me the feeling of a proper luxury 4x4. The drive was quiet with little noise entering the cab from outside. The4x4 felt sturdy and well-grounded. The cab felt more spacious and roomy as opposed to its earlier models.

Off road driving gave me yet another surprise as I had not anticipated the new, more luxurious version to retain the same level of driving delight that it had in earlier versions. Usually when 4x4manufacturers start to focus on the luxury element of their vehicles they end up spoiling the actual driving pleasure and core essence of the car. But this is not the case with the Grand. Although the 3.8 liter V6 was a bit slower than my expectation while taking off, it did manage to make use of the torque and stability on the rough terrain and never even made it feel like it was outdoing its capacity. I only felt a minute level of sloppiness on some points in time but for me those were ignorable.

The entire independent suspension feature along with its suspension setting options performed as efficiently as they promise. The Grand Cherokee is definitely an option that I would go for if I am a true fan of 4x4s. Plus it offers the best of both worlds when it comes to luxury along with the feel of a proper 4x4 and that is what truly matters.
