Before you can begin blogging, you need web hosting and a domain name. You CAN get a free blogging account at WordPress.com. I don't recommend that route though. They put limitations on what you may do plus you don't own your site; they do. I'm writing this for the readers who prefer to self host.
The first step is to decide what you want to blog about. I'm going to assume that everybody wants their blog to be read. To make sure you get the maximum search engine results, you want to look for keywords first. The best place to check keywords at is Google Keyword Tool. Type the subject you want to blog about in the keyword tool. It will display how many searches for that keyword. It will also tell you how much competition there is for the keyword. If you look further down the page, you'll see related keywords. You want keywords that have high search engine counts, but low competition. This is the beginning process for picking your domain name and blog posts (in the future). Write down 20 - 30 keywords and keep that list.
Now that you have your subject and keyword list, it is time to choose a domain name. There are two things you want to check when choosing your domain name. The first thing is head to Google search and enter your desired domain name, with quotes, and see how many results there are. You want under 20,000. The fewer the better. Once you have a domain name that passes this test, then you have to see if the name is available to register. I use NameCheap to register my domain names. Their pricing is consistently good and purchasing is a simple process. A.com is the best choice, but there are other options. I used. info for this blog. It will probably take you several tries before you find a domain name that passes both tests. DO N'T buy your domain name until you have chosen a web hosting company. Some web hosting companies offer a free domain name with your account.
It is very simple to point your domain name to your web host if they are separate companies. Here are the steps in order to point your domain to your web host.
Step 1) Log into your domain registrar.
Step 2) Select the domain you wish to point to your web host.
Step 3) Search for a setting called "Nameserver" or "DNS Settings".
(Namecheap.com DNS setup)
Step 4) Enter in your two DNS addresses in the "1." And "2." Fields. If
you don't know your DNS addresses, contact your webhost. They
should have provided this information when you registered.
Step 5) Save changes.
My top choice for web hosting is Web Hosting Hub. They offer a free domain name with your account. The one drawback this company has is it charges you for the entire contract at once. So if you enroll in a 3 year contract, it will be billed as $ 178.20 which breaks down to $ 4.95 per month. There are 1 and 2 year plans also available that are more per month. If you have the money, this company with the yearly plans is the way to go.
If money is an issue, then I recommend HostGator. You can pay by the month. They do NOT offer a free domain name. When you're looking at the pricing for the various plans on HostGator, add 20 % to the quoted amount if you're paying by the month. The quoted, discounted rate will only be good for the first month.
Both companies are comparable in features. They both offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth, have money back guarantees, offer unlimited subdomains, support WordPress installation, and except for the cheapest plan on HostGator, they support unlimited domains. If you think, you might ever want to blog on another subject, unlimited domains and subdomains is very important. I currently have 2 domains and 3 subdomains. I only pay for 1 hosting account for the 5 sites though.
If you want to further investigate different web hosting companies and learn more about web hosting, I have a site for that. Just go to Web Hosting.
Come back after you've completed these steps and we'll start setting up WordPress.
