The Perfect Fathers Day Gift

My father has indeed never ever been one to ask for a lot, having actually constantly relied on the old proverb, "tis far better to give than to get." Every holiday, birthday celebration and unique occasion has always featured an unbelievably thoughtful and even decadent present from Dad. Yet, every holiday, birthday and unique occasion, my father consistently seemed to get the same old lack-luster presents in return. This Father's Day, I desperately needed to turn the tables and spoil my father by having an absolutely extraordinary and one-of-a-kind present... a gift that he would undoubtedly always prize.

The 1st thing I needed to carry out was to thoroughly and craftily uncover exactly what Dad truly wanted; this proved to be more simply said than done. I determined I had no option but to head back home and do some extensive investigation, all without my Dad suspecting anything. So, a week later, I made the 25 minute journey home and spent the afternoon drinking tea with my Mother and watching golf on the television with Dad. The moment Dad drifted off to a mid-day snooze in his number one recliner chair, I silently made my way up to the attic.

The attic was just as I remembered, old, dusty and also full of family history. And though the dirt and cobwebs did little to relieve my allergies, I found myself completely immersed in old pictures, photo albums and dearest family relics. I must have spent hours in the attic room since the light from the fractured windowpane started to fade until dusk was upon me. I knew I would have to find inspiration promptly before my dad would free himself from the recliner chair and come looking for me.

I had nearly quit when I saw it... an old black and white photo of my father at age 3, sitting on my grandfather's lap. There were very few photos of my grandfather to be found anywhere, so I immediately knew this was unique. I took the frame, dusted off the old glass with my sleeve and had a closer look. There on my grandfather's wrist was an old gold watch with an eagle skillfully engrained on the dial. My grandfather had indeed cherished that watch and even bequeathed it to my dad. Unfortunately, the watch had been lost several years back and my dad had been absolutely distraught about it. It was then that I knew precisely just what it was that I needed to get for my dad and that it would absolutely be the very best Father's Day present ever.

As Father's Day approaches, I find myself eager with anticipation; I truly can't wait to come back home once again and present my father a gift he truly will appreciate. But for now, his gift rests securely on my workdesk, wrapped with loving care in a little white box and topped with a a simple red bow. Inside that box, sits a men's Black Hills Gold watch, including a black dial and gold eagle etching; a watch nearly exactly same as the one my grandfather had so many years ago. And I am reminded of exactly what my father always says, "Memories can never be replaced, but new ones can always be made."
