Distraction - it does more irritation than help. Perhaps it has been instrumental to your failing that test, getting called by the teacher to answer an unknown question, being laughed at because you blurted out a silly answer, and the list goes on. The chance for mental focus development has been seen as one of the goals of personal development. The reason: it bolsters your ability to concentrate and get to where you want to go or what you want to attain.
Limitation - this concept on cognitive development has been disproved by science. The brain, in its biological glory, is more than capable to handle the things you think you cannot do. The hindrance is not with how many fissures you have but you yourself. While additional scientific research tells more of what the grey matter can do, it may cause you a lot of benefit to start learning that focus you want and catch up with what you have been missing. Here are some tips.
Build mental stamina. Children have a specific attention duration and that is true. Adults have theirs but it can be extended. Notice that you cannot keep on switching from one task to another as you end up starting a lot and not finishing any. The same applies for the mental faculty. While your brain gets tired, it is possible to take advantage of the time it is active and engage in a mind-stimulating activity: thinking. When you get your brain to work, you get to focus. Choose activities that interests you like reading a book. Trying to extend your capacity to think and focus slowly builds cognitive stamina allowing you to eventually do it long-term.
Filter your thoughts. Persistent thinking is caused by being worried with something else. Why? It is because preoccupation is a sign of unfinished business. Learn to prioritize. Thinking about doing the things that matters most before moving on the next is also an indication of self-discipline. Your ability to delay worry is an indicator of proper adaptation. If you cannot get a thought off of your head, jot it down and review it when your current task is done. You'd also need to learn on thinking about the right things on the right time and at the right place. Bills, schoolwork, partying - these are some examples that are situation-based and are not meant to mingle with each other.
Know what you want. Just like goal-setting, eyeing what you intend to think about is one way to develop mental focus. Because you know what to do, you will also know how to act in accordance to your will. Stop procrastinating. Related to filtering your thoughts, the persistency of something unfinished is haunting and it may become stressful. Sometimes, procrastination is the reason.
Developing mental focus may seem too far from reachable but it was mentioned above that self-discipline is one key to doing this. Remember, you do not even have to be smart to seek growth but along the process, you will be.
