"Do-it-yourself" (DIY) is a common phrase in home improvement and typically means that a certain item or task is done by an layperson. DIY tasks in home improvement include building a new kitchen cabinet or painting the living room walls. The coverage of DIY in home improvement has also significantly expanded over the years, and now there are hundreds - if not thousands - of DIY websites that help people do home improvement on their own.
One of these is replacement window installation, which can be done in three main steps and can be finished in about four hours. The materials that are needed when installing replacement windows are wood shims, a tape measure, a dripless caulking gun with many caulking tubes, a hammer, a cordless drill, a small prybar, a wood chisel, a utility knife, a miter saw, a square, a hammer, and the replacement window.
The first main step in DIY replacement window installation is the measuring of the present window. All measurements should be taken inside the house. Get the width and height of the window by running the tape measure from one window jamb to the other. Measure the bottom, middle, and top and get the smallest measurement.
The second main step is removing the existing window. Here, one should remove the stops - the thin vertical pieces of wood that stop sashes from falling - and the sashes - the only window part that moves. All sashes and stops should be removed, except for the stops on the outside of the window. Once these are removed, the window frame, window jamb, and other remaining parts should be cleaned and repaired to help the replacement window fit into the frame. The tools that are needed here are the utility knife, the pry bar, the hammer, and the wood shims.
The third and final main step is to install the replacement window. One should test the replacement window first to make sure that fits, and then place the sashes and the bumper stops at the middle of the window. Caulk the jambs and the sill angle, and then install the header piece. Position the window properly in the opening, and use the wood shims in case the window needs to be squared out. Fix the mounting screws in place.
Finally, make sure that the sashes slide smoothly; use the adjustment screws, or remove or replace shims to help loosen tight sashes. Apply caulk on the inside of the window and put in the inside stops and finish screws. The caulking gun, caulk tubes, screwdriver, miter saw, replacement window, and cordless drill are the materials used in this step.
This is just one of many DIY replacement window installation instructions that can be found online. There are others that show how vinyl replacement windows can be installed onto brick walls, how to install replacement windows with three panes, and even how to properly measure replacement windows. With the surplus of DIY information, it isn't surprising that many homeowners also consider doing home improvement on their own.
